Ever had that feeling of absence?

Sometimes even mistakes can turn out right. Here I woke up really early, way too early as I misjudged the time for a sunrise. So for an hour or so I was just waiting for the light. As the moon descended this opportunity arouse. This shot is taken at a point where on one side of the beach you can see east and watch the sunrise and basically just turn around and face west and watch the moon set. At this point the resort was abandoned, hence the chair. I only moved it slightly to improve the composition. Tucked amongst the trees by the ocean, “The Shack” sums up the essence of the Cocos Islands for me. A hut for surfers, a deck chair in the shade, warm breeze, driftwood, surf and sand between my toes. Well maybe a few mozzies too! Here exists a culture hard to find elsewhere; one of respect, where you can leave your surfboard and towel and come back to it a day later, a month later.

So I am still gathering photos for the CD cover I am designing for the Famous Blue Raincoat, and you will recognise the scene, but I just adored how this came out… Shot on 35mm out of date slide film cross processed… Because it is so dark inside and the dark areas are black I love how you cannot see where the frame ends and the new one begins to make the perfect panorama!
