This collection of Urban Landscapes is drawn from a larger body of work called Darkscapes. They are moody evocative invitations into mystery and imagination taken from the ordinary things that make up the fabric of city life. Beauty is all around us if only we take the time to notice it. We all look but maybe we don’t all see. This collection of images is a way for me to share what I see with others. These discarded flowers retain their loveliness even as they are swept away into the storm water drain. . /

The Gulf Fritillary, Agraulis vanillae, a striking, bright orange butterfly of the family Nymphalidae, subfamily Heliconiinae. These were formerly classified in a separate family, the Heliconiidae or longwing butterflies, and like other longwings this species does have long, rather narrow wings in comparison with other butterflies. It is not closely related to the true fritillaries. It is a medium to large butterfly, with a wingspan of from 6 to 9.5 cm. Its underwings are buff, with large silvery spots. It takes its name from the fact that migrating flights of the butterflies are sometimes seen over the Gulf of Mexico. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- 2009 BUTTERFLIES CALENDAR / / / / / / Or a T-Shirt to go along with /

This is the Mountain Spiderwort, Tradescantia subaspera Ker-Gawl. var. montana, . It gets its name because the angular leaf arrangement looks kinda like a squatting spider. This shot was taken on the Balsam Mountain and Heintooga Ridge Road in the Great Smoky Mountains The Cherokee and other Native American tribes used Virginia spiderwort for various food and medicinal purposes. The young leaves were eaten as salad greens or were mixed with other greens and then either fried or boiled until tender. The plant was mashed and rubbed onto insect bites to relieve pain and itching. A paste, made from the mashed roots, was used as a poultice to treat cancer. A tea made from the plant was used as a laxative and to treat stomachaches associated with overeating. Virginia spiderwort was one of the seven ingredients in a tea used to treat “female ailments or rupture.” It was also combined with several other ingredients in a medicine for kidney trouble.

IMAGE FEATURED IN ALL ABOUT HEARTS These beautiful flowers grow in my garden every spring. They are the first ones to surface shortly after the tulips. I love how delicate yet firm and strong they are, until they too succumb to the elements. It makes a lovely heartfelt or romantic card.
