Morning Glories are literally growing everywhere, much to my delight! Hummingbirds and Bumble Bees take great pleasure feeding from them. Beautiful, delicate and graceful, as they twist and turn their vines around trees and shrubs, they provide plenty of inspiration for this woman behind her camera lens! I hope you will enjoy them too!

An assortment of some of the florals I’ve been doing. All are in watercolor (some have a little pastel to help in the overall feeling) and are on Arches “rough” paper. I really hope that this is a colorful and exciting calendar to help you through the year.

Collection of white & red roses photographed by Mariaan Krog. / The Wars of the Roses / To associate anything as beautiful as a rose with something as bloody as war, particularly civil war, seems to be a fundamental mistake; however, the series of conflicts in England between 1455 and 1485 has come to be known as the Wars of the Roses What have roses got to do with any of this? / The white rose of the House of York and red rose of the House of Lancaster / ©TopFoto.co.uk The family that deposed Richard II were descendents of the Duke of Lancaster, whose family crest was a red rose – probably the species known as Rosa gallica a.k.a. the Apothecaries’ Rose. It had been the heraldic device of the family since the time of the very first Duke of Lancaster in the mid-13th century. The family that claimed to be the true heirs to the throne was the descendents of the Duke of York, one of whom’s family crest was a white rose, Rosa alba. This was adopted as an emblem by the first Duke of York in the 14th century and represents the purity of the Virgin Mary. Edward IV was a particular fan of the rose-en-soleil, which is a white rose surrounded by the golden rays of the sun, and earned himself the nickname “the Rose”. The dynastic struggle therefore became known as the Wars of the Roses, although it was certainly not called that at the time. The expression may have been coined by Sir Walter Scott in his novel Ivanhoe as late as 1820. The followers of each side may have worn red or white rose badges on their clothes to demonstrate their affiliation but more frequently they would have worn the coat of arms or livery of the nobleman they directly served. / The white rose of the House of York and red rose of the House of Lancaster / ©TopFoto.co.uk The emblem of the Tudor rose is not a real rose at all but a symbolic fusion of the red rose of Lancaster with the white rose of York, used on official documents and in paintings to legitimise the Tudor dynasty. It can be pointed out that the red petals surround the white ones, reminding us of the Lancastrian victory over the Yorkists at Bosworth.
