Here are some interesting facts I learned about the Mississippi River and why it deserves the title Mighty: / The Mississippi is widest just downstream from its confluence with the Missouri River (near Alton, Il.) where it is nearly 1 mile across. / At its headwaters, the Mississippi is less than 3 feet deep. The river’s deepest section is between Governor Nicholls Wharf and Algiers Point in New Orleans where it is 200 feet deep. / The value of the agricultural products and the huge agribusiness industry that has developed in the basin produces 92% of the nation’s agricultural exports, 78% of the world’s exports in feed grains and soybeans, and most of the livestock and hogs produced nationally. Sixty percent of all grain exported from the US is shipped via the Mississippi River through the Port of New Orleans and the Port of South Louisiana. In measure of tonnage, the largest port in the world is located on the Mississippi River at LaPlace, La. / The Mississippi River Basin or Watershed drains 41% of continental United States. Thirty-one states and 2 Canadian provinces are included in the watershed. / The Mississippi River and its floodplain are home to a diverse population of living things: at least 260 species of fishes, 25% of all fish species in North America. Forty percent of the nation’s migratory waterfowl use the river corridor during their Spring and Fall migration. Sixty percent of all North American birds (326 species) use the Mississippi River Basin as their migratory flyway. / To move goods up and down the Mississippi, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains a 9-foot shipping channel from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Minneapolis, MN. From Baton Rouge past New Orleans to Head of Passes, a 45 foot channel is maintained to allow ocean-going vessels access to ports as far upstream as Baton Rouge. / *On one gallon of fuel, 1 ton of cargo can be moved 60 miles by truck, 202 miles by rail, and 514 miles by barge. One barge holds as much as 15 jumbo rail hoppers and 58 semi truck trailers. One bargeload of wheat is enough to bake 2.25 million loaves of bread. Whatever you are giving your attention to is already vibrating. And when you give your attention to it, if you maintain your focus for as little as 17 seconds, you begin to include its vibration, whatever it is, in your vibration. Do you know the relationship that you are all looking for? Do you know what it really is? You want the relationship between you and you. And when you meet a person who looks fondly at you, or who is appreciative of you, or someone you look fondly upon, or someone you appreciate, it just hooks you up to your Inner Being, which is what you want all along. So the relationship you are all looking for is the relationship between you and you. And everything else is just helpful in that, really. Don’t you find that interesting? That what you really want is a reason to vibrationally connect with who you really are. And so, you ask so much of people because you say to them, “You need to be the one who causes me to feel good.” And what we want to say to all of you is: If any of you are without the relationship of your dreams right now, that’s a wonderful thing. Because now you have an opportunity to work on the relationship that really matters first and foremost. And then, in that connection, the relationship of your dreams will come. But you are going to discover the relationship of your dreams is really your own Inner Being. It’s that infusion of clarity and confidence and wellness, that’s what you are reaching for. And it is nice to have a human friend who holds you as their object of attention and adores you right into your connection. But we want you experience greater independence than that. We want you to say to you lovers, “I love you, but I don’t live for you. Because Source Energy flows through me. You are a catalyst to my wellbeing, but you are not essential to my wellbeing. Because I’ve got that figured out on my own. I have reached for thoughts that give me relief. And I have relieved myself all the way into my full connection of who I really am. And now we can just dance and play together.” Can you feel how you take them off the hook? In other words, do you know how many men would flock to you.? (ALL OF THEM!) .if they knew that you would allow them to be as they are and you would not hold them responsible for your happiness. That’s what everyone wants. How much bondage is there in believing that your happiness depends on me, so I’ve got to figure out what you want, and stand on my head in all those different ways, and it’s not even possible! The greatest gift you can give anyone is to be happy. And we will take that further. The greatest gift you can give to any partner, past, present or future is to be so connected with who you truly are that they are irrelevant to your connection. Savior of a Language This photograph is of a Cherokee shawl, a plate of the Cherokee alphabet (found miraculously at a yard sale many years ago) with a merged photo of a bust of sequoyah from a museum. Sequoyah was born between 1760 and 1770 five miles from the original Cherokee capital of Chota in Tuskegee, now part of Tennessee. At that time, the Cherokees were an independent nation still living on their original tribal lands. They were coexisting with the British Colonies as equal neighbors and were making seperate trade agreements with the government. / Sequoyah’s mother ‘Wurteh’ belonged to a prominent Cherokee family, whose three brothers and nephew were all chiefs. Sequoyah’s father was probably a white shopkeeper, named Nathaniel Gist with whom Wurteh lived until he went home to Virginia, while Sequoyah was still an infant. Gist had nothing further to do with either of them and died before Sequoyah became famous. / Wurteh brought up Sequoyah in a little cabin in the Overhills country, resembling a fullblood, was interested in everything and became a blacksmith and self-taught silversmith. He was naturally mechanical and a gifted artist whose special talent was for drawing animals. He married, had a family of four sons and settled on some land in the village of Tallahassee, not far from his birthplace. / As a very young man he had noticed the power that the ability to read gave the white man. He began to think and talk, both jokingly and seriously, about creating an equivalent advantage for the Cherokees. / About 1806 he and other Cherokees were forced off their land, and he moved his family to Alabama. In 1809 he started working on the syllabary, with a pair of silver spurs on which he had a friend stamp his Cherokee name in English letters – sitting for hours turning the spurs in his hand, thinking and jotting down tentative ideas on wood shingles. He used his nephew’s speller and some printed alphabets lent by missionaries for ideas as to the function of the letters. For the sounds of the letters represented he had to rely on his own powers of analysis, since he knew no English at all at this time. / The alphabets he saw are supposed to have included English, Hebrew and Greek. / During the Creek War of 1813-1814, he fought against the Creek for the US Government, interrupting his work, but after injuring his leg, he returned to the syllabary zealously until the cabin that contained all his work burnt down. / Migrating to Arkansas, he started over on the syllabary, reducing 200 letters to 86, remarried in 1815 and in 1821 was granted a hearing before the tribal council presenting written messages between his daughter and himself, proving writing worked just as well in Cherokee as in English. The council was impressed and Sequoyah began teaching youths and in a few months the whole nation was reading and writing the Official Cherokee alphabet in 1821. / In 1825, a medal was struck for him by the US and he began Cherokee periodical printed in Cherokee. He also visited Washington on behalf of the Cherokees in 1827, prior to the ‘Trail of Tears’. In 1839, as the president of the Westaern Cherokees, with his cousin George Lowrey, the president of the Eastern Band, they co-signed an Act of Union, uniting the two previously separated and warring tribes. / In 1842, he set off to Mexico looking for dissident members of the tribe, apparently becoming ill and dying around San Fernando, Mexico in 1843, where his grave has never been found. Like so many traditional heroes of other nations, he had vanished into legend, leaving a legacy of an alphabet, language and writing skills for his people.
