More new stuff for you, and a few hints on what’s on the way soon… 1. Change the order of your art and designs! And check out the stats on how many views, comments, favourites and sales each has received. 2. The Portfolio in MyBubble has been split into Art and Clothing sections. This is a precursor to giving art, writing, and clothing their own separate public areas. 3. “Journal entries” have been renamed blogs. We are working towards separating out “written work” (e.g. poems, stories, articles) from blogs, which should make a big difference to all you writers! 4. The old “people” page has been upgraded to community . Find out what’s happening on RedBubble, see which work is popular right now, meet featured people, and get involved in activities and competitions. Phew! It’s been a big week, but there is plenty more on the way soon…

  • Shirtheads - featuring Natalie Tyler
    by caanan

This week’s Shirthead victim runs the / Unofficial Redbubble Tshirt Blog !http://images-0.redbubbl…

This week’s Shirthead victim runs the / Unofficial Redbubble Tshirt Blog and, contrary to her redbubble avatar, Natalie Tyler is not a piece of fruit. Although, like a piece of fruit, peel off a layer or two, and you get something altogether delicious. Let’s eat! This is the tshirt, by the way, folks… :oD So, what is a manchild? I have witnessed two types of manchild in their natural habitat and interestingly, they are almost polar opposites. One has the appearance of a man but displays Peter Pan-like qualities, namely the refusal to act like an adult. Often they will give the impression that they are fully grown adults but scratch the surface and you will find a fourteen year-old. Typical behavior includes: dressing like a teenager, owning one or more games consoles, spending an unhealthy amount of time on said games consoles and eating snickers bars for breakfast. The other variety is more like a man trapped in a child’s body. He has the appearance of someone who is dressed up in his Dad’s clothing. He would like to be seen as a man of the world but his childlike features give the game away. He longs for respect. Type one would probably love a manchild t-shirt and so he should! He’s fighting the good fight. I wish there was a recognised female equivalent to this type of manchild. Manchild type two would probably feel a small part of himself die inside if you gave him a manchild t-shirt. He would much rather a box of cigars. Or perhaps a suit in his size. What’s your favouritest tshirt you’ve ever worn? I bought a Faith No More ‘The Real Thing’ tour t-shirt from Brashes in Southland (Melbourne) when I was about 13. They only had extra large but I wanted it so badly I didn’t care that I was only 5ft tall and it was knee length. My mum kindly took it up for me so it resembled an oversized crop top. I still wore it til it was threadbare. Editor’s note – Ha ha! Brashes. :oP If you could handpick the most awesome rock band in the world, who would be in it? Why? What would they, and their first CD, be called? Wow. You sure ask the tough questions. I think I’d go for Mike Patton on lead vocals/percussion. Dave Grohl on drums and guitar (hey – it’s fantasy). Guest vocals from Jack Black and Maynard James Keenan. Bootsy Collins on bass just to mix it up a bit. They would be called Mindbuggery and the first album would be self titled. How did you find the bubble? What made you stick around and take to the tees? I was directed to the site by a friend. I signed up then spent a lot of time staring at amazing work and thinking about uploading some of my own. I faced my demons, acquired a copy of some software I hadn’t used in a while and set myself a few tasks to help me get back into things. One of those first ‘tasks’ happened to be featured and I sold a couple and from then on I was hooked. I’ve thought about uploading art but I like the layout of my profile page better when it’s got nine images in one block. What do you do when you’re not on the bubble? Picture the least creative environment you can possibly imagine. Times that by 10. No prizes for guessing I work at a law firm then. At this point I should stress I’m not a lawyer. I just got caught up with a bad crowd. I’ve deviated massively off the creative path and RedBubble has been my salvation. It’s cleared the cobwebs from the right side of my brain and has paved the way for a brighter future ;) I also sleep and catch public transport. Where do your ideas come from? Often they just come out of the process of trying to learn something new. If I distract myself from the task of creating something then things seem to flow a bit better. It’s getting started that’s the main problem so if I trick myself into it, before I know it I’m working on an idea. Other ideas will simply come from random things I see or hear during the day. I try to actually act on the phrase ‘that would make a cool t-shirt’. What are some of the best ideas you’ve come across so far this year? One of the coolest things I’ve seen this year is Irina Block’s stunning diamond necklace . I also really like little people – a tiny street art project described as ‘little hand painted people, left in London to fend for themselves’. Oh – and Joshua Allen Harris’s Inflatable Sculptures . One of those crazy ideas you admire someone for thinking up … Can you give us a random thought you constantly have but never vocalised before? Unfortunately no. I have plenty of random thoughts but most of them have been vocalised. I vocalise a fair bit. If you could be responsible for one thing, but no-one knew it was you who did it, what would it be? Ross Robinson already said he’d ‘take care’ of Celine Dion didn’t he? I could cover her back catalogue. Not literally, of course (that would be horrific). I mean I would remove every trace of it from our planet. What do you think is the affliction of the modern generation, and how can we eradicate it? Shopping as a leisure activity. It’s one thing to browse a fine internet site for some quality art to enhance your home or a lovely t-shirt to keep you warm but I think it’s scary how some people will spend a day out at a shopping centre for entertainment. Sometimes every weekend. Often alone. People should ask themselves why they don’t spend more time thinking, reading, creating, talking or just being. There’s nothing wrong with a good shop but it might be worth looking at how much time we spend doing it and how we’re really hoping it will make us feel. Can I get an Amen? ;o) Thanks Natalie! And alas, I can only pick one tshirt to feature in the actual strip, but this one also rocks. Seeya next week folks! Caanan. We’re working on some RedBubble widgets to help take your artwork and writing beyond the walls of the bubble. For those who are unfamiliar with widgets, they are little applications that sit on your website, blog, desktop, etc and provide content or functionality from somewhere else. Common examples include a Flickr Badge, Google Adsense , and GapingVoid . What makes good widgets stand out from the crowd is that they do something useful for you. This can be as simple as displaying a sample or a slideshow of your artwork, showing the local weather forecast, grabbing a daily cartoon, or helping you make money from your blog by showing advertising. But until the RedBubble widgets come along, you can easily create your own simple version. Here’s a little tutorial that helps you create a widget to display your RedBubble artwork or writing on your website or blog, all in under 5 minutes. The example below can be found here / To create your own like this, visit Widgetbox, click on “create a blidget”, and enter your RedBubble URL e.g. www.redbubble.com/people/username, and hit continue. Then in the Feed URL window, put in either “http://www.redbubble.com/people/username/works/visual.atom” (if you want to show your artwork), or “http://www.redbubble.com/people/username/works/journals.atom” (if you want to show your writing) Hit the go button, customise your widget with color, title, image, description and tags, and choose if you want it private or available to others. Click Publish Widget, and you’re nearly done! In the top right hand corner, hit the green Get Widget button, and either embed it in various sites automatically or grab the code to put it in your our website or blog. Stay tuned for a more sophisticated RedBubble widget soon. In the meantime, tell me what your favourite widget is and what it does

Still discovering my way around the site, tips from other members, and the functionality provided by this site, I discovered yet another helpful aspect this morning…linking a slide show to a website or blogsite. / I decided to give it a try this morning on my blogspot, and if it functioned well, would then place it on my website. It adds a special element of color and and substance the blog did not have prior. I will go in later and also place this in my website. / Thank you to Red Bubble, everyone I have met here, and the kind guidance offered when I have needed to ask for help along the way. / Though this is a recently created blog, and I am still working on it, feel free to have a peek, anyone wishing to link to this blog, please do so! I have create a new blog – RedBubblers’s Blog – on which I intend to highlight art (primarily from RedBubble) that I like. Essentially, It’s just a way whereby we can drive traffic to redbubble and hopefully improve sales and/or interest. At this stage I hope to add to the blog ever day or so, depending on my free time. Sometimes there will be artwork with links back to redbubble, other times it will contain text-only comments (but still with links back). Being listed on the blog is pretty well a matter of chance – when I see something I like, I naturally want to spread the news. This is not an open invitation for anyone to submit works or requests to me – just create great stuff and when I find it I will attempt to fit it in. Generally I will try to notify people before adding their images to the blog as a matter of courtesy. RedBubble is what we make it – so anything that raises the awareness of art, improves it’s accessibility, or bring the focus onto the wonderful work of the talented artists on RedBubble has to be a good thing. The blog address is http://redbubblers.wordpress.com/ and I recommend frequent visits – or subscribing to it. BTW. The blog is not related to the excellent redbubble group RedBubblers Oh, and a subsequent announcement may be expected in week or so regarding a further (related) venture or two. Regards, / Lightsmith

My dad is very ill. He has been on and off for quite awhile but things are worse than ever now. This is a scary time. I’m having trouble expressing what I’m feeling..but I need to post something here, for my Dad, to shout out to the world that I love you so very much Dad…. Last night / I was reminiscing with the stars / telling them how wonderful you are. / They said they would always look after you / and keep you in their hearts. I left the stars / and spoke with the moon / I told her how I loved you so / she said she would guide you / and protect you wherever you go. Today I spoke with the sun, / I told him about your warm and caring smile. / He said he would always shine on you / And follow you, no matter how far the miles. I left the sun / and talked with the clouds / telling them how you love your daughter / and that you make her very proud. They said they would always carry you / and lead you in the right direction. My Dear Daddy…you are in good hands. Please please please keep the faith. I love you.

I’m going to start using my journal as a blog on our marketing journey with RedBubble. So expect to see stuff about our philosophy, learnings, observations, activities, questions, failures, and general musings about taking a creative Aussie startup onto the world stage. For that tiny fraction of you who are interested in my (all too rarely published) creative writing, I may put the odd piece here as well …at least until we sort out a better way to publish finished written work e.g. in the portfolio section. I’ve got a big list of stuff I’d love to discuss, but let me know if there’s something specific you’re keen to hear or talk about. This won’t be a lecture, more a journey of discovery!

We’re thinking about how to make RedBubble a better place for writers The Unleashed short story competition attracted a lot of talented writers, but to be honest we haven’t done enough since then to support them on RedBubble. That will change. Initiatives in the pipeline for writers include: / 1. A new competition for short stories and poetry / 2. Redesign site – ‘gallery’ probably splits into ‘art’, ‘writing’, ‘t-shirts’. / 3. Distinguish between ‘written works’ and journal entries/blogs / 4. Reaching out to writers already on RedBubble for their input It will take some time to get all these done, but we’re keen to launch the competition and get lots of input on improvements ASAP. If you feel strongly about making RedBubble a better place for writers, now’s a great time to speak up! Let us know what you’d like to see – be it new features, website changes, community activities, etc. Also check out this forum topic seeking input from writers.

  • MY FAVOURITES - "The Albion" by Paul Louis Villani
    by Adriana Glackin

    I love Australian architecture & I particularly lo…

I love Australian architecture & I particularly love the treatment of this early architecture by Paul Louis Villani. Everytime I view “The Albion”, I see something that I’m sure wasn’t there before. The sheer detail, flaking paintwork, slat gate, fretwork on the verandah & under the eaves, the missing awning, the new iron sheets. I can imagine the storm that blew away that awning – it knocked out a piece of fretwork on the verandah along the way & goodness knows where those iron sheets landed when they blew off the roof… “The Albion” also tells me that life back then, the early 1900’s, wouldn’t have been as simple as those who pine for the “good old days” would have us think. Was it really that simple, pleasant? Sure, they didn’t have to worry about recharging their mobile phones, or running over the broadband limit each month, or missing their favourite show on tv, or how many friends they have on facebook, or how many people have viewed their images on RB, or more important things like what they’re going to be when they grow up, should they have a gap year, or how many different careers can they squeeze in. No, their worries were very different. Their working hours were long; children definitely seen but not heard; they had one job, from school to retirement – if they made it that far; fridges washing machines, stoves, motor vehicles weren’t available to people living in workers’ cottages. In fact, fridges in the 1950’s still cost 250pounds, the equivalent to about $8,000 today (how much was that LCD/Plasma Screen again??) Industrial accidents, if not fatal, would be the ruin of the family and children sent to live with relatives. Wow, I could go on, I’m painting a bleak and depressing picture, something that “The Albion” is not. “The Albion” is a magestic home, it’s withstood all these years, innovations, progress – it’s still standing proud and beautiful and well-loved – is that cable for broadband?

Oddly enough there was the briefest powercut I ever encountered right before I clicked on “Save this entry”... [Just mentionning it for private record!] /   /   / rEvolution 9 Some may have noticed I had been preparing this for a while. Actually when I came back to my old love of computer art and fractals a couple years ago, it was because I had realised that technology could now allow working with big enough pictures that they could print great as large art canvas, such a 2 meters wide canvas. So I’m now happy to present 78’’ wide canvas prints. Unfortunately such sizes aren’t available (yet?) through RedBubble, so I have to redirect you to my LIMITED EDITION gallery on Zazzle.com, where they call it «colossal size» ! At this point I consider that my original digital art is finally transferable into the real world at its true original size ; that’s why it will only be available in this particular size as limited editions of 21 prints (including one reserved for the author, er… me) that can each be considered an original print. Of course smaller sizes at Redbubble or Zazzle will remain open editions. But as opposed to unlimited prints, only 21 of each colossal artwork will ever be printed. / I’ll add a certificate of authenticity with the edition number (sent by snail mail after you send a picture to the RB Buyers Booth as proof! - yes, I know it won’t be a RB product…). They are also grouped on RedBubble from a text link on my profile, where each piece has a link to its limited edition (Zazzle page). Remember you can also get quite big posters in RedBubble too. /   /   / Do we always need to evolve ? My colossal works print at 100 dpi, mostly at 78’’, so the biggest side is usually at least 7800 pixels. / The ultimate step would be to make images printable at 300 dpi. / But it means they should be at least 23400 pixels large. As it takes my quad core computer about 15 hours to render (i.e. calculate) some of my 9000 large fractals, it would probably take 39 hours of computing time (meaning I can’t do much more than running one other light application at the same time). And that’s for only one layer ! My most elaborate pieces hold around 9 layers, 6 or 7 of them of fractals. That’s 234 hours or 9,75 days to render them all. Remember ? In the meanwhile I can’t manipulate pictures and do any work. It means less creative time, of which I also need between 6 and 24 hours per piece. Plus I’d need to hope being lucky enough to avoid powercuts, which majestically ruin any render… Well, appart maybe from an experiment that could be run the day I’ll upgrade to a newer computer and can dedicate one to render time, I don’t see 300 dpi resolution in colossal prints happen any time soon, do you ? Or do you know of any ? I’m curious. Unless I made pixels calcul mistakes ? DPI, PPI, inches and pixel sizes comprehension seems like learning chinese… Or as if you had to learn riding a bike each time you ask yourself a pixel question !

So I had some time on my hands over the long weekend and I got to thinking that we could do with somewhere we can plug the awesome work of RedBubble t-shirt designers. If your work isn’t in the popular or featured tabs then it can very quickly slip into the abyss so I thought I’d start a little blog to showcase some of the fine designs on offer. It’s called bubbling under the surface and it’s an ‘unofficial redbubble t-shirt blog”. There will be a mix of old favourites and some you may have missed first time around. If there’s any designs you think we should feature then please bubblemail me – I’m looking out for the hidden gems. Let me know what you think! Nat :)

Not a stranger to causing a stink myself sometimes, I’ve managed to do it once more. This time, however, you’ll be relieved to know it’s just the title of the latest short story on my new look Short Short Stories blog. If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to find yourself sat next to the crazy person on a train, plain or automobile…then you might enjoy this! Short Short Stories has been running in one guise or another since 2005. It carries well over 160 of my short short tales, all inspired by word-of-the-day at dictionary.com, and was once described in an article as “a must read flash fiction website”. It’s a shame my mum stopped writing articles shortly after! ;) Comments on the blog or here are welcomed and appreciated!

Feel free to ask questions… Currently working on a project for the Burswood Casino, Perth. I thought I’d blog this for those interested in 3D work. The project is to outfit the casino atrium with an extensive LED lighting system – something like you see on LV casinos. Here, I will only show the process leading up to the actual finished building, and not the lighting aspect, which is not only extensive, but also confidential (and I am dropping the project for a while and focusing on another, higher-priority project for the same client). Firstly, here are two shots of the building – daytime, and nighttime. Interesting architecture (looks like a giant spaceship), and only really appreciated when one looks closely at the minute details, as I have had to do. / / / / / This is a top-view architectural blueprint, reversed to white-on-black for better contrast while working on it: / / / / Ok – I start out by using the architectural plan as a background in the top view of my 3D program – in this case – 3D Studio Max. This allows me to match angles and size, despite it all being built to scale. Because I need to manipulate all the panes individually, it is not enough to just build flat surfaces and ‘paint’ imagery on it. Each glass pane is built individually, complete with aluminum channel borders, and bolts. You wont see that detail in these images, but trust me – they are there. So, I start building the glass sections, composed of joined panes, like so: / / / / / / / / / / Getting the angles right was not as easy as it seems. There are 3 axises to manipulate, and it turned out a bit of a nightmare during the process. / / Fabricating the sections and positioning them takes a while. Despite having the correct dimensions for each panel, I could not align the triangular sections with the rectangular sections. And then – I discovered that they ‘cheated’ :) The glass panes making up the rectangular sections are actually longer – and not shown in the plans. / / / / / / Finally, I have the rough shape of the atrium: / / / / Next, I begin to build the surrounding structure – a simpler jog, using elementary geometry and boolean exercises: / / / / Oh, and I chucked in a sky background just to feel like I’m getting somewhere: / / / / I alternate between the main structures, like the pond, and little details like the aerials because I have a short attention span :) / / / / A few more details – building the surrounding walkway / / / / Changed the sky, because it got boring – only temporary. I begin playing with lighting and applying custom made (in Photoshop) materials: / / / / Lighting is 90% of a 3D render – it takes a long time to get it right – the mood, and the realism. I place palm trees around the pond (made earlier), and spend a while getting lighting right for a ‘dusk’ image. Also work on the pond reflections, and lighting behind glass panels: / / / / Finally, I use a decent sky that suits the image: / / / / Has come up pretty good, I think. / Depending on what the client says, I may or may not continue this, showing the LED lighting system in place and operating. Thanks for reading, and ask anything you like :)

Let’s talk…about anything? I’m a newbie around here. I recognize a few faces / pieces from around the web. However, most of the work I’ve seen is very refreshing and new to me. I’m instantly impressed by the amount of responses I’ve received in just a few days. I feel like the site has a few short comings as far as replies and comments. I would really like to be able to comment directly to each poster. It’s not necessary, but sometimes there are questions and it would allow them to know you responded without having to sift through all my comments just to keep checking. Categories. I’ve read a few different blogs already about the categories or lack of. It is nice to see everything because I respect all art mediums. However as a photographer, I would like to be able to just look at photos if I choose. But not a big deal. If anyone has bothered to read this far, then now I’m gonna take the time to say Thank You! I really appreciate the feedback and the opportunity to meet new artists. I’ve got a feeling I’ve already posted my best, so hopefully I can continue to grab others attention with some older stuff. New stuff doesn’t come that often…but I’ll be sure to post as soon as I think I have something worthwhile.

I’ve been really diggin the widgets ive been making, and placing them all over the place. It started just with my own personal stuff that i wanted to put on my other blogs/websites (yes, i have many).. then, i wanted to show others how they could utilize the RSS feed found within Redbubble (gallery, groups and forums). today i made a PAGE of Widgets from the RSS feeds of some of the groups i belong to in Redbubble.. / Widgets for You if you want me to make you a widget that i havent made yet..just bubblemail me. if you would like any of the widgets you see on the page, just click on the “Get Widget” button/link and it will give you codes you can copy and paste into your website, profile at myspace, facebook, bebo, and many other places..you will see all the familiar logos ;)

The new blog Wat is Art? is now up and running, and will be featuring interviews and artwork from RB artists. To extend this opportunity for artist promotion, i would like to invite RB graphic artists to design their ownTitle Graphic (or header) for the blog. / GRAPHIC SPECS must be 724 pix wide x 170 pixels must contain the title Wat is Art? must contain the subtitle insights and inspirations behind the artists, behind the art can be any colour and any style you like If/when your graphic is chosen to be the featured graphic, you will be credited at the top of the side column, with a link to your RB profile and your groovy RB widget. the blog was only launched this week, but is already attracting surprising traffic from the early stats i’ve seen. More interviews are arriving, and over the next 2 months it will be growing steadily. Feel free to spread this around the RB community. HAPPY DESIGNING!
