The bridge reminds me of an emotion of solitude, which is not to be confused with loneliness. The former leads to an internal peace and being one with nature and oneself while the latter was a feeling of being forced to be alone, deprived of freedom and choice. I used to call this photo “Peaceful Bridge” until a young patient of mine (at the time she was nine years old) explored the difference between solitude and loneliness. When the image was presented to him as an illustration, he exclaimed, “Oh, solitude is peace, inner peace!” And the true title of the piece was born. The doe took a little time off from busy eating for the photo opportunity, although she didn’t want to give up the tasty colorful leaf. By now everyone who has ever seen my work knows that I’m absolutely “addicted” to develop a deep relationship and establish an intimate communication with mule deer (we don’t have a lot of white-tailed deer around here). Early Appalachian life must have been filled with golden mornings. Wonder how often they would pause from their chores, and just drink in the glorious light filtering through the fog. Stopped and gave thanks to God for his blessings and felt at awe with his creation. Wonder how often they knew they had found their pot of gold. Not in a monetary sense, but in the riches of life. They struggled from day to day but how often did they rejoice at what they were blessed with. The coolness of the mist upon their face. The warmth of the sun as it forged its way through the fog. The sounds of nature as she too is awakening to greet the morn. Wonder how rich they may have felt seeing the warm glow softly lighting the fruits of their labor. You too can feel this. You too can feel awakened and renewed with the dawn, if only willing to experience it. Visit and help preserve that which we are blessed with.……Image taken at the Mountain Farm Museum, GSMNP

It s alright Ma / A heartily thanks to all the good wishes, challenge entries. You all have brought a great warm welling feeling for me and that of eternal gratitude and humility. / You are all such wondeful people I am in the low mountains at an area called Toten by the town Gjoevik, Recouping 14 days to 3 weeks, good food alot of rest and training here. Waking up in the dark of the night / feeling sores healing / no sleep without something / a thankkyou you to you all / a painkiller and back to sleep / Be back soon take care . .

My dog River posing for a portrait in the snow. She has ALWAYS liked her picture being taken since she barely opened her eyes at two weeks of age. This is a little bridge in my piece of the woods after the first snow. All is calm and quiet. Even the deer seemed to be walking gingerly – not wanting to disturbed the “peace”. Some may even say that the picture portrays a feeling of “eerie-ness” but for me, it’s just the quietness and serenity. My new wolf friend was determined to teach me how to howl after our shared lunch. He very “tenderly” took half of my sandwich from my offering hand with his mouth, lay it down on the ground and ate it layer by layer, slowly and savoringly, unlike my dog River, who would ALWAYS “wolf down” whatever is offered to her! :) So now he set out, just a few feet away, raised one front leg a tiny bit for emphasis and howled. I got down on all fours, copied the posture and did the same. Obviously he was a little dissatisfied with my learning so he repeated the whole thing another time. I love Autumn and there have been many years I missed most of this season in dooors, working away, oblivious to the changes taking place around me. Autumn has always been a very busy season in the retail business and my responsibilities increase this time of year. This year and last year, I made a point to schedule some vacation time in late October. I spent a long weekend in the Ozark National Forest enjoing all that Autumn has to offer. I also spent some time in the forest of middle Tennessee. One thing we noticed is that this year’s Autumn in very different than last year. Besides the color being more prominent, the ground is also more fruitful. We witnessed tons and tons of nuts of all kinds scattered in abundance on the forest floor. Trees bearing fruit, several on every branch, falling plentifully upon the ground. The bushes and trees are full of berries. Does this mean we are in for a long winter. The funny thing is, I did not notice large numbers of squirrels and other animals gathering them. Many lie on the ground untouched, in large numbers. This has been food for thought into just what this means. It seems we have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving that will soon be upon us. Luke 10:2 And He was saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. SAN FRANCISCO PRESIDIO AMERICAN MILITARY ESTAB. NOVEMBER 1850 When the United States entered World War II after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Presidio soldiers dug foxholes along the nearby beaches. Fourth Army Commander Gen. John L. DeWitt conducted the internment of thousands of Japanese and Japanese-Americans on the West Coast while U.S. soldiers of Japanese descent were trained to read and speak Japanese at the first Military Intelligence Service language school organized at Crissy Field. During the 1950s, the Presidio served as the headquarters for the Nike missile defense program and headquarters for the famed Sixth U.S. Army. The Presidio of San Francisco, encompassing more than 350 buildings with historic value, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962. In 1989, the Presidio closed as a military entity and was transferred to the National Park Service in October 1994. On Dec. 12, 1884, the War Department designated nine acres, including the site of the old post cemetery, as San Francisco National Cemetery. It was the first national cemetery established on the West Coast and, as such, marks the growth and development of a system of national cemeteries extending beyond the battlefields of the Civil War. Initial interments included the remains of the dead from the former post cemetery as well as individuals removed from cemeteries at abandoned forts and camps elsewhere along the Pacific coast and western frontier. In 1934, all unknown remains in the cemetery were disinterred and reinterred in one plot. Many soldiers and sailors who died overseas serving in the Philippines, China and other areas of the Pacific Theater are interred in San Francisco National Cemetery. The cemetery is enclosed with a stone wall and slopes down a hill that today frames a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Its original ornamental cast-iron entrance gates are present but have been unused since the entrance was relocated. Tall eucalyptus trees further enclose the cemetery. The lodge and rostrum date to the 1920s and reflect the Spanish Revival styling introduced to several western cemeteries.

There were many ducks in the little “live” stream that was surrounded by thick ice and deep snow and I caught three close-ups. Both males were looking towards the less colorful female and she was the only one who tried to look through the ice at her own reflection! The fawn looked as though she could not be more than a month old as her fur was all soft to touch and fluffy. She moved slowly and gently and looked into the lens, as if to say, “Hi, my name is Baby Fluffy”. :) I thought she was the cutest of all as she has long eye lashes and shinny tender eyes. Over the last summer and fall, I must have taken over a thousand shots of this old buck alone. He was around most of the mornings when River and I were in the woods. Sometimes he was playful, other times very hungry so he simply ignored the camera and kept on eating but this morning he was pensive and wanted a portrait to express just that! As those who know my work are all aware: I don’t usually “play with” Photoshop effects (of course except frames as I love framing). This time I can’t resist the concept so I used “vivid light” as an effect and add an extra gradient layer on top of the photo. I can only hope it worked.

Back in the deep summer, when all were in blossom and the leaves were rich in color and taste, the doe had plenty of time to experience the “other things” in life than just search for food. One day she decided to figure out what creature it was that I carried around with me and pushed at the top of the “head” from time to time to make a sound. She came so close to the lens that I had to quickly change to a wide-angle one in order to take this photo.
