The city can be a dark and lonely place for some, I thank my lucky stars that I’m not one… This concept came to me one morning just after waking up. This is when most of my ideas and imagery come to me. I’ve worn back the edges to further skew the image.

And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? -Shakespeare Every year sealers bludgeon seals with clubs and “hakapiks” (clubs with a metal hook on the end), drag conscious seals across the ice floes with boat hooks, and toss dead and dying animals into heaps and leave their carcasses to rot because there is no market for their meat. Seals are also shot, but bludgeoning is preferred, because pelt buyers deduct money for every bullet hole in a seal’s skin. Veterinarians who studied a past hunt concluded that the hunters failed to comply with Canada’s basic animal welfare standards and that 42 percent of the seals appeared to have been skinned alive. Despite Canada’s ‘new and improved’ methods being implemented this year, sealers are still slaughtering these pups in the same way they have for previous years. It’s unconscionable. Also known as lady’s locket and lady in a boat, this quick-growing, clump-forming, classic perennial has been gracing gardens for more than a century, and is well loved for its early blooms and ability to thrive under myriad conditions. Dicentra (from the Greek words dis, meaning “two”, and kentros, meaning “spurs”, referring to the flower’s unusual shape) are spring blooming, but some flower longer than others. Generally, the cooler the location, the longer the blooms will last. Most species come from the forest floors of deep woods and moist canyons and are thus well acclimatized to shade gardens.

This is part of the series of paintings I did while coming to terms with childhood sexual abuse. Betrayal is the core of the legacy of childhood sexual abuse. My abuse was perpetrated by my grandfather at his house while he was supposed to be watching me after school until my parents could pick me up. The feelings I felt at the time were horrible and unspeakable, and now as an adult, I know them to be an ugly confusion of fear, helplessness, repulsion, guilt, and a myriad of other emotions. Perhaps the most atrocious aspect of the abuse comes down to a horrible betrayal – of my childhood, my innocence, the trust my parents put in him, and the fact that he was supposed to be protecting me, instead of injuring me. Thus BETRAYAL shows a granite stone that represents my core self – eternal and strong but which has become hard and petrified. The heart has been cut out of it, though it still feels since it is bleeding. There are lovely green trees in the background, reaching up like spires towards heaven. But the one on the end has caught fire – will the others follow? Those trees represent my relationships with other people, always going up in flames because I can no longer trust. Just. Don’t. And long after I drew this, I’m finally able to write down some of the description that was in my head as I painted her. / People say she’s abstract. This surprises me _ And something looked down and said “This is wrong”. And they were torn apart. And now she guards the gates of heaven for evermore, until her love is returned to her. And no angel may pass. On lighter screens, you can see the bottom edge of the wings quite starkly / – they’re supposed to nearly blend into the darkness (and my settings are right. I checked) / I discovered new ways to use ArtRage with this – the semi-transparent veils, for example, are thin lines of blur/soft palette knife. She’s waiting for you to die and try to go to heaven. Then she’ll tear your wings off and throw you back down to hell. As mentioned.. she’s a little irrational. /
