This photo was taken in Lithgow which is situated in the Blue Mountains of NSW, Australia. As you can see the furnace is now nothing more than a shell yet it is still a very impressive piece of architecture. In October 1875 iron smelting began in Lithgow under the direction of Enoch Hughes. The foundry was erected on Thomas Brown’s Esk Bank property where ore was found just beneath the surface of the ground. Hughes successfully encouraged James Rutherford of Bathurst, a principal shareholder and manager of Cobb and Co., Dan Williams a Canadian railway engineer who had worked on the Zig Zag and the Honourable John Sutherland the Minister for Public Works to join him in this steel making venture. By the end of 1876 the blast furnace was producing over 100 tons of pig-iron per week (Lithgow Public School 1947). Source: http://www.lisp.com.au/~lithtour/blasthist.htm

Also seen in Flickr. Built in 1958, Manly Boat Harbor is home to a wide array of vessels from the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron to home cruisers and fishing boats. The bayside suburb of Manly is instantly recognisable by the masts of yachts moored in the boat harbour at the southern tip of the Esplanade next to Manly Harbour Village. Manly is especially popular on weekends when Brisbane residents take the short trip to the Manly area to go fishing or boating, shop at the markets, picnic in the park, dine out, swim at the pool or simply walk along the foreshore enjoying the sea breeze.
Theme: “Land Air & Sea” Comments: Took a lot of these while I was scouting a location for a model shoot the next day. Had the camera but no tripod, ISO levels ended up as high as 6400 to keep the shutter speeds high Photoshop was not used in the editing of this image Photographer: Brett Jackman / Digital Developing: Brett Jackman Scene: Opera House Sydney Harbour Australia / Conditions: Low light, high ISO Tools of the trade: Nikon D700 Copyright: Polar Impressions Photography / Polar Impressions On Red Bubble / Polar Impressions On Deviant Art

The Prins Willem was the largest ship at the time of the Dutch East India Company (the VOC). It was built in 1649 in Middelburg in the Netherlands and sank near Madagaskar in 1662. Curiously, the name on the ship was Prins Willim. Two reasons have been mentioned for this. One being that that is Middle Dutch, the other that there wasn’t enough space for the name, so they changed the ‘e’ to an ‘i’, which is shorter. This is a replica which has been built under the same name. It was built in 1984 at shipyard Amels in Makkum (Netherlands) for the Oranda Mura (Holland Village) themepark in Nagasaki, Japan. Since 2004, she is part of the themepark Cape Holland in Den Helder, the Netherlands. HDR. Sadly, this ship was lost in a fire on 30 July, 2009.
