Date: October 2002 Medium: Digital Airbrush (Photoshop 7) Description: Expression Suppression is symbolic of the frustration I have felt through the years I have been studying art at high school. Though I have never failed anything in art I thought this would be a dramatic way to express my opposition towards conformity in the classroom. The board reads “This is how you should draw a cartoon rabbit” This piece has been: / - In The Young Originals Exhibition 2002. / - A Finalist in the Quest For Excellence 2002. / - Exhibited at Garden City Shopping Center (Western Australia) 2002. / - A Runner up in the Upper Secondary division of The Shaun Tan Awards For Young Artists 2003.

A Work from “Words I Learnt From The English Class” / This piece says “Mooree (the Boree)” which is a hypocorism or ‘pet name/nick name’ but these names to a non-white are usually to do with your race, religion etc. “Boree” is a derogatory word for Aboriginal and is used to remind me of where I stand within the schoolyard.

A work from “Words I Learnt From The English Class”. This one is ‘Onomatopoeia’ which is a word that sounds like the word it’s describing like: ‘buzz’ ‘ping’ or ‘hiss’ etc. / The word ‘boong’ is a racist word for an Australian Aboriginal and also relates to a racist joke about the sound an Aborigine makes when it hits the bullbar of your car. A popular joke to tell in my presence whilst at school. The vibration is to reflect this onomatopoeic word but also the jolt that went through my body when realising the nature of these ‘humorous’ jokes.
