A Carolina chickadee has a little green worm/caterpillar for breakfast.
This bird * can remember where it hid food for at least 28 days after putting it in its hiding place * drops its body temperature at night by 10 to 12°C below daytime body temperature, to conserve energy * depletes much of its energy by feeding nestlings from six to 14 times an hour * has a very established hierarchy, or “pecking order” Measuring only 12 to 15 cm from bill-tip to tail-tip, the Black-capped Chickadee Poecile atricapilla is greenish-gray above with a white underside shading to light brownish buff along its flanks. Its long, dark-gray tail looks like a handle. A black cap, well drawn over sparkling eyes, covers its head from cone-like bill to nape, or back of the neck. Pure white cheek patches and a triangular black throat patch complete its most conspicuous markings. Because chickadees inhabit such a wide variety of climates and habitats, birds from different populations may vary somewhat in size and plumage. / (www.hww.ca) Photographed in Anola, Manitoba, Canada / / / Framed Print

Feature Who Are YOU to Judge? – 4/5/09 / ImageWriting – 3/19/09 Our trees are putting on buds…spring is here…it’s 76 degrees today and sunny skies…I was out in the yard with my two sons a few days ago…I spotted this little chickadee in the budding tree overhead…he was singing a sweet song…a melody pure and true…he was pretty far up in the tree…had to really zoom in…we see these little birds around quite often…please take time to watch the video…this little girl is so precious and talented…she has stolen my heart! Texture Three Little Birds BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE / Parus atricapillus Bird Spotting: This diminutive bird is one of the most familiar sights in the skies of North America. The black cap and bib and bright white cheeks make this bird easily recognizable. The wings are gray and edged in white, which gives this bird a delicate, handpainted look. Habitat: Black-capped chickadees enjoy deciduous and mixed forests as well as open woodlands. In winter suburban areas become their place of refuge. Nesting: Black-capped chickadees look for holes in trees, natural cavities or bird boxes to house their young. Each clutch consists of six to eight brown-speckled white eggs. The nest is a small cup constructed of grass, fur, soft plant material and feathers. Bird Bite: The black-capped chickadee feeds on insect eggs and larvae by hanging upside down while clinging to the undersides of tree branches. Backyard Tip: Flocks of this tame and inquisitive bird spend the winter in areas where bird feeders are easily available. They also find bird boxes an ideal location for their nests. Black-capped chickadees enjoy excavating nest cavities in the quaking aspen and will eat the fruit of the tall red huckleberry.

Chickadees are described in one of my bird books as “merry little birds” that flit from tree to tree “often hanging acrobatically up side down as they search for those tiny creatures…”. This one is the Black-capped chickadee, that frequents coastal British Columbia, where this image was captured, using a Nikon D300 and Nikkor 600 mm lens. The song of the black-capped chickadee is one of my favorites. They have quite a repertoire of sounds, depending on the situation.
This little fellow was certainly chipper, for the first time in three days we saw the sun. The chickadee is checking out the sunflower seed feeder.
a black-capped chickadee strikes a most handsome pose, stopping on a pine bough to overlook the sunflower seed feeder. Normally, they don’t sit long enough to get a good shot, but today, he decided to give me a break. /

The nuthatches and chickadees in a local park here in Calgary can be quite tame. At one point while I was at the park, I had four chickadees on me at the same time. Two on my hand, one a little farther up my arm and one on my shoulder. Wish I had someone there to get that shot ;-)

The Black-capped Chickadee has a black cap and bib with white sides to the face. Its under parts are white with rusty brown on the flanks; its back is gray. It has a short dark bill, short wings and a long tail. The breeding habitat of the Black-capped Chickadee is mixed or deciduous woods in Canada, Alaska and the northern United States.
