  I am proud to unveil the latest painting from my studio, titled “Segawa Kikunjojo II & Ishiyama no aki no tsuki”. / (Dancing The Part Of Yamauba & The Autumn Moon Above Ishi Mountain) My painting is styled after ancient (1760 era) Japanese Graphic art, by artists like Tori Kiyomitsu Ga and Eshi Tori Kiyomasu Hitsu and based on paintings like, The Autumn Moon Above Ishi Mountain and Segawa Kikunojo II, Dancing the Part of Yamuba. / This is the first in my study paintings of ancient Japanese artwork. It was a very intense and rewarding piece to work on. Every line and brush stroke needed to be calculated and yet also flow with an ease and grace. This is the first study painting in a series of many I intend to delve into over the next year. / I am very drawn to Japanese art and grew up with traditional Japanese artwork in my home. The beauty of this type of art has always captured me, as I hope my work will for you as well. Here are some photos of my art as it is being created and completed…enjoy! xoxo

  I am proud to unveil my newest creation titled Coy Kiss / I have been working on this over the last several months and have finally birthed it as of last night. There are many layers and texture. This painting literally changes and comes alive in different lighting. I used acrylic and some other mediums to slow the drying process. After it was done I finished the water in my painting with gloss varnish in certain areas to achieve water highlights…so it actually appears like the water is real…and perhaps that there is even movement in it. This is a special piece to me, there is a lot of symbolism and beauty in Koi fish to me. Also I am drawn to fish in general and life in water. / The bright contrasting colors and dead space of this work is what attracted me to it in the first place. I want to say a special “Thank You” to Rebecca Cruz who let me paint her photo titled Koi As I was creating the name for it, the play on words for “Coy” just kept coming to my heart. Thus “Coy Kiss”! / There is a written work from Venus and Adonis by William Shakespeare, that I chose to describe my work. I feel it perfectly captures my heart for this piece and the moment… ...”Never did passenger in summer’s heat / More thirst for drink than she for this good turn. / Her help she sees, but help she cannot get; / She bathes in water, yet her fire must burn: / ‘O! pity,’ ‘gan she cry, ‘flint-hearted boy: / ‘Tis but a kiss I beg; why art thou coy?”...   Hey I need to get more of my work shown , so if anyone knows of any art shows coming up or galleries I should submit my work to please let me know. I know I need to get some new and better pieces created and this might just be the motivation I need. My goal for this new year is to get back into working color and put together a few smaller pencil drawing books…. but its so ^%!*#*( discouraging to hear from galleries who say they love my work but then int he same breath ask me what else can I do. As if pencil drawings isn’t art? Black and white realistic pencil drawings is what i do best, yet I am one step way from giving it all up!! Are there no galleries or art shows that recognize black and white drawings or realistic traditional art any more? Is this the end of real art? David J.
