This shot recieved a runner up award in the Black and White division of the ANZANG Nature and Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006. The day before the shot was taken we had hiked 25 sandy km along the Howe Wilderness Zone coastline near the NSW / Victorian border. After a lengthy struggle through the dunes and undergrowth to get to Lake Wau Wauka we filled up with water and retraced our steps to camp on the edge of the dune field. The next morning I got up an hour before sunrise and witnessed the white dunes absorb all the predawn colours before a spectacular ocean sunrise had me chewing through my film in awe. I wandered around the huge dune fields taking advantage of the morning light that emphasised the ripples in the sand. The truly special element was the effect some rain had had on the dunes from a few days earlier. The sand in some areas had not dried out completely and as the wind had blown the lighter dry sand away amazing patterns had been left in the remaining wet sand. I didn’t intend for the striped part (bottom) to / be like that. I’d added an “artistic frame” and was trying to / move it around with the hand tool-but accidentally clicked / the magic wand instead. The former railway line that once snaked its way fifteen kilometres from Adamstown to Belmont was originally constructed in the late 1880’s. It was used to transport coal from mines in the Lake Macquarie area to the Port of Newcastle. Evidence of some of the mines is still visible from the track. The Adamstown to Belmont Rail line helped contribute to the development of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. As well as being used for coal haulage, it was used as a passenger service between Belmont and Newcastle with stations at Kahibah, Whitebridge and Redhead. The last scheduled steam train ran in 1967 before switching to diesel and the last passenger train ran in 1971. During the 1980’s coal mines along the corridor began to close down and the line ceased to be used in 1991 with the closure of Lambton B Colliery. The railway closed in 1991, and the two Councils completed the purchase of the corridor in 1994. Shortly after, the Fernleigh Tunnel (having survived two earthquakes in 1925 and 1989) was closed to public access following an assessment of its structural condition. It has since been reopened and this is where I took this photograph.

This is for the HDIR group challenge. The original image is infrared. Taken on my old FujiFilm FinePix with an R72 filter attached. I used Topaz Adjust to get the HDR effect on the leaves of the tree. The challenge stipulates a reflection….so I made one ..(I hope) by inverting the original image and adding some motion blur and altering the perspective. Then I added a layer of texture ..I felt it just needed something else to finish it off. Oh, and the title comes from a band called “LIVE” from their CD “Mental Jewelry” It’s playing at the moment on my computer and I thought it was appropriate.

Sacre Coeur, Paris. The amazingly original basilica is located in Montmartre, leading to the highest point of Paris city. First constructed in 1875, it was not completed until 1914, due to a problematic law system that almost stopped construction entirely. Only saved by a loophole, construction finally continued to the end. I didn’t get to spend as much time here as I would normally like to, but the climb to the top of the tower was worth it for the incredible view of the city below. Original shot layered twice, with 3 textures, colour altering of each layer, blending of layers, further colour altering and an omni light effect.
