Completed in 2004, age 17 Been awhile since I have uploaded an artwork.. I have several drawings and paintings from highschool, but I just haven’t had much time for scanning; or in this case as it is a very large painting (40” x 30”), photographing and skewing in photoshop… This is a slightly cropped version of the original, due to the limits of my camera. My original signature got cropped out so I had to insert a new one in photoshop; in the original it is not actually located there. The two subjects are posed in similar positions, each having a dark, circular central focus., Both images have lines above and surrounding the centres, which draw attention towards the centres. The vertical composition help strenghten the feeling of height given by the vertical lines. Both subjects are organic, however one, the eye, has straight lines and geometrical shapes, while the rose has curvy lines and organic shapes. In the eye, the centre is literally dark, while in the flower the darkness is created by shadows. This shot recieved a runner up award in the Black and White division of the ANZANG Nature and Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2006. The day before the shot was taken we had hiked 25 sandy km along the Howe Wilderness Zone coastline near the NSW / Victorian border. After a lengthy struggle through the dunes and undergrowth to get to Lake Wau Wauka we filled up with water and retraced our steps to camp on the edge of the dune field. The next morning I got up an hour before sunrise and witnessed the white dunes absorb all the predawn colours before a spectacular ocean sunrise had me chewing through my film in awe. I wandered around the huge dune fields taking advantage of the morning light that emphasised the ripples in the sand. The truly special element was the effect some rain had had on the dunes from a few days earlier. The sand in some areas had not dried out completely and as the wind had blown the lighter dry sand away amazing patterns had been left in the remaining wet sand. I was thinking about my Nanna the other day….one story she used to tell when I was little…..was that you can tell the time using Dandelyons…....if you count how many blows it takes you to blow off all the seeds…then thats what time it is….I found myself telling the same story to my little girl…...thats the inspiration behind this image….

I didn’t intend for the striped part (bottom) to / be like that. I’d added an “artistic frame” and was trying to / move it around with the hand tool-but accidentally clicked / the magic wand instead. After a pretty cold and dreary day at the zoo…......from a photographic standpoint…all the animals were in their warm enclosures laughing at the stupid humans shivering for warmth on the outside of the glass….the polariser got rid of the reflections but not the accumulation of animal gunk and kiddy snot and the prospect of hours of cloning cage out of images quite frankly left me with the feeling that I would sooner stick a pencil in my eye…....we did have a good time though and Ollie and Grace whooped and sqwaked all the way round. Ollie made monkey noises all the way back to the car. The things his tiny eyes saw for the first time filled him with tremendous excitement! He enjoyed it so much the first thing he did when he got home…...after removing his shoes, socks and trousers….......my wife says he is more like his dad than I would care to admit in this respect….........was to get his animal book….....I don’t think he understood our conversation about readers digest though…..... I did take some shots…......but I dont like them enough to upload them as photo’s to be contemplated for walls etc. I think I will turn them into Tee shirts.

This is the effect that the TV + The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy has on my daughter…...I am told that the ladies underwear section of the Littlewoods catalogue and Kate Moss clutching rose petals to her knockers in that new perfume advert has the same effect on me….....even waving chocolate under her nose …...and I am led to believe that chocolate is suitable distraction therapy for all women….. won’t get her attention….. Captivation….......
