I love the way these signets are surrounded by their loving parents. I watched these signets for quite some time, there were four of them and watching their parents lovingly care for them, always keeping a watchful eye was wonderful. These particular swans are black swans from Canberra, Australia. They were an unexpected extra delight to see at Floriade 07.

Today was a beautiful day, the sun came out at last, the rain stopped, that was enough for me, grabbed my camera and headed straight for Langstone Habour. The tide was out the sun was shining and it wasn’t too cold. There were 2 swans in the little pool of water by the redundant windmill. All I have done to this image is a simple sharp and change to b&w and that is it. /

BRITISH WILDLIFE SERIES This is the last of my older works (I think) / Swan Splash was done about 20 years ago / One of my first pen and ink drawings in this / style. / I have done this piece about 5 times for / exhibitions over the years (different sizes and / slightly different details) but this is the original / that only I have. Another shot from my recent family holiday to Lake Tyers with my new 5DmkII. The light was amazing and now that I’m shooting digital I was experimenting more with filters and bracketing with my fav being this stop under with a full length 3 stop neutral density graduated filter. Now that I’ve shot a few frames to be honest I’m not seeing digital as a step up colour wise compared to my old Velvia shots with these sort of sunset shots (outside of the orange sunset it seems a bit colourless and grey too me). For waterfall, low light and wildlife it leaves Velvia for dead but I think Velvia will still have a place in my arsenal in certain situations. Abnoba, goddess of the Black Forest and Danube Abnoba was a goddess of the Black Forest and Danube River, worshipped by Celtic Gauls, and later by Romans, as Diana Abnoba (goddess of the hunt). Abnoba is believed to mean fog or mist on the river. There are two alters in Roman baths in Badenweiler and Mühlenbach, Germany, respectively, inscribed with the name of “Diana Abnoba” (see below). Rome annexed Gaul in about 51 BC; and it’s conceivable that they attempted to merge gods and goddesses of the two civilizations. / ! I chose to represent Abnoba, because I have an affinity for the forest—to me a kind of sacred place, where trees whisper amongst themselves, their vocal chords, the wind. I love how nature’s cycle of life, and decay-giving life, again, is reduced to the obvious; even there on the forest floor; where I can see it, below my feet and hands, elbows, and curious eye. But to the Celtic Gauls, the forest was life, itself. It was the source of food—they hunted there; the source of firewood for warmth and cooking; for fresh water; and no doubt weapons. The forest was a shield, protecting them. How interesting to have a woman—a divine woman, no less, guarding these very precious resources—the Black Forest, the Danube River, and surrounding rivers and streams. What is it about a woman that would make her the best candidate for protecting the two resources that meant life or death to entire communities? I leave you to contemplate that. Hopefully “Abnoba, goddess of the Black Forest and Danube”, will inspire someone who sees it to become the protector of their own region’s rivers, woods, and creatures—great and small. Information was a bit scarce on the animals that reside in the Black Forest region of Germany, except that there are the usual forest animals, including fox and big cats. The Sperlingskauz, a forest owl; and the Kolkrabe, a species of Raven, were specifically noted as being special to the region. I was lucky enough to find images of these two in the public domain on wikipedia images. Look for the Black Forest’s Sperlingskauz (owl) and the Kolkrabe (Raven) in the piece.
