“So with a little touch from you / and a little hug from me / we showed the world love is strong / when two become one. So with a little smile from you / and a little kiss from me / we can go anywhere at anytime / and be what we wanna be All fear is gone / When two become one.” / - – - / Shot during one beautiful evening with a friend down Lake Monger, Western Australia. An old boat sitting safely on the shore at Queenscliff in Victoria, Australia. Kept finding myself going back to this boat to take photos, looked so sad sitting by itself. Black and White conversion in Lightroom, HDR in Photomatix.

I love the way these signets are surrounded by their loving parents. I watched these signets for quite some time, there were four of them and watching their parents lovingly care for them, always keeping a watchful eye was wonderful. These particular swans are black swans from Canberra, Australia. They were an unexpected extra delight to see at Floriade 07.

Pair of Black-Necked Swans, native to South America. I first saw one of these critters on Lake Villarrica in Chile but it wasn’t a very cooperative model. The handsome boys in this photo reside at the Arundel Wildlife and Wetlands Trust, West Sussex, England.

This turned out to be more involved than a strightforward edit. Partly because the swan is white, so my usual lighting techniques needed a little fine tuning so the image didn’t over-expose. I started as usual on the lighting by overlapping various layers styles and rendering. I adjusted the shadows/highlight slider frequently to darken any garish highlights and I also altered the contrast/brightness as I went. The image was coming along, but it still looked a little flat. I felt the swan’s face was lacking a bit of detail, so I did a quick sharpen up using the unsharp mask, added some dry brush effects and texture and reduced any noise. The swan needed some highlights, especially of the eyes,so I went ahead and spent quite a bit of time enhancing the highlights and shadows by hand, using vivid light and the normal brush tool. After that, the swan instantly came to life!! It’s a bit hard to write every step of my editing process, but there’s a bit of an insight into how the image got to where it is. The photograph of the swan was taken not long after I started photography, and it was on RB once upon a time. I like the original, but there’s nothing like the effects of photoshop… I’m SUCH and addict!! Photography and editing by Jennifer Woodward © 2008

The swan is a continuation of a theme I am currently exploring. I drew this one at work and I guess its my fairy tale escape from work. Its also inspired by Charles Kingsley’s The Water Babies and more recently book The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue (read it!). Both books are about a child being captured by nature and becoming faery-like creatures. This idea that nature would spirit a human child away to make them into one of their own intrigues me. It appeals to my sense of adventure and magic, and the hope that I’m not getting to old to escape anything that would stifle me.
