White tiger at the aquarium in Houston. This is why I do not like seeing animals in zoos or cages. Wouldn’t you be bored if you were a jungle animal and you were put in a cage like this? They are beautiful, but I would prefer they were free. © 2008 Charles Dobbs Photography. All photographs and artworks in this portfolio are copyrighted and owned by the artist, Charles Dobbs. This elderly woman sits at the window and contemplates the world outside. She does not see far beyond the window frame because her world has diminished considerably. Two years ago she was officially diagnosed with dementia after a life threatening surgery and long hospital stay. However, her family and friends noticed a difference in her personality over the last several years. Once a proud and hard working single mom, she raised two children during the 60’s and 70’s at a time when single parenthood was not as widely accepted as it is today. At present, she is reduced to little more than the passive demeanor of a quiet child. She is aware of the reduction in both her mental and physical abilities. She also understands that she is helpless to change anything. / It takes great courage to face the inevitable. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia; it accounts for 64 per cent of all dementias. For example right now in the US, Alzeihmer’s has surpassed diabetes and is the sixth leading cause of death. As baby boomers are rapidly approaching the age of retirement it is believed that 10 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s in their lifetime. Currently, there are more than 24 million people in the world with dementia—this is estimated to rise to 81 million by the year 2040.6 / Statistics taken from both the Canadian and American Alzeihmer’s Society. / Published by Redbubble in Compassion, Courage and Friendship book October 2008 / Compassion, Courage & Friendship Featured in the Nirvana group October 2008 / Featured in the ImageWriting group November 2008

I was driving along side some of the many paddocks that frequent my area (the Hawkesbury area) when I came across this cow, the light seemed to be pretty decent and seeing as how the cow was a few metres away I decided it would be a good opportunity to test out my new 55-200mm lens.. / The cow just would not look at me (unusual for a cow) and then finally it decided to sneak a glance so I snapped the shutter and this was the result.. / Post processing involved adjusting the exposure, contrast and levels, and then applying a vignette and a monochrome filter. / I havent uploaded anything for quite some time so I decided to throw this image to the wind and see if it flies or crashes and burns.. / As per usual comments and critiquing are more than welcome, and thanks very much for taking a look! Another one of my shots from my trip to the Toronto zoo. I loved the black and white version of this, it got rid of all the distractions around the tiger, but I wanted his eye colour in the shot, so I selective coloured his eyes. I am very happy with how it turned out. I hope you like it too! Thanks for looking! =)smile / /

Angel Warda posted a lovely self portrait of herself called feeling. She intended to convey the emotion of sadness because (as she said,) sadness can look beautiful. That was really thought provoking to me, and it inspired me to do a portrait of my own, which would express that emotion.

This female Sumatran Tiger Panthera tigris sumatrae lives at the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, Washington. Although they are kept separated most of the time there is also a male and hopefully some day there will be kittens. There are only 4 to 500 wild Sumatran Tigers left due to habitat distruction and captive breeding may be the only way to keep this unique species from going extinct.
