  • Reeshofpark, Tilburg. A photography turned into a digital painting. Having my daughter just picked up from her school on one Friday in November 2007, we ran through the local park to be in time for her ballet class. We were nearly too late, because in the park I couldn’t leave this lovely autumn scene behind me without taking a camera out of the bag! / I love it in big format, so this is a procedure how to make a nice print out of a photograph taken by a simple 2MB digital compact: / - photograph a lovely scene (important!) / - upload the file into your computer / - use software wisely to improve it. / What I did with this one: / - first, in Picasa: Feelin’ lucky, color temperature, sharpen, glow, gradtint / - second, in GIMP: scale, oilify, add frame if desired I hope you will like the result as much as I do. Comments and critiques very welcome :)

The stones are used to keep the eggs off the snow and ice, and prevent the eggs from freezing. / Photo taken on the Antartic Peninsula. / /

The slick on the water (top left hand side) is the sea beginning to freeze. / Photo taken in the Lemaire Channel Antarctic Peninsular For how much longer will scenes like this exist. Don’t let this photo fool you, the temperature in the Antarctic is rising 5 times faster than the global average. The time for eloquent oratory and pontification is over, the time for action is long overdue. The Gentoo Penguin is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. Temperatures on the frozen continent are rising five times faster than the global average due to the unprecedented rate of climate change, pushing four species perilously close to extinction. Warmer temperatures are forcing penguins to raise their young on increasingly thinner and more precarious ice floes, while stronger winds mean many eggs and chicks are being blown away from their parents before they are able to survive on their own. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice destroys nesting sites and reduces vital food sources, such as krill.

They had just left the water and seemed to be deciding which way they should go. • Late afternoon, smell of Italian herbs, garlic and tasty pizza, everything so peaceful and tranquil, you only hear the waves at the lake and quick steps in the narrow street… An evening in Malcesine, a lovely village at the shore of Lago di Garda (Garda Lake), Italy. / Taken already in August 2001, the photograph I originally got from the lab was all but perfect and quite disappointing: white sky, black foreground, no details, simply too much contrast. But I couldn’t forget the lovely scene… When I got a film scanner in 2007 (finally!), this was one of the first film frames I have scanned. And there was really much more on the negative! Enjoy the atmosphere :) /

  • Can you feel it? Love and care… I have taken this photograph because I’ve seen a lovely picture of love and care before my eyes… / Two years later I went back to the negative, scanned it (with love and care, of course; here I mean taking care for properly balanced lights and shadows above all, with no important details lost, because the photograph was taken in a room with poor light), made some minor corrections (color curves, desaturated, toned…) and added a frame with text. Can you feel it? Love and care… / / / / You may also want to see the original design with the title included: /

  • Nothing added to photo in photoshop, just tonal editing, boarder and contrast etc… mouse, make-up and hair all part of the original shot… Enjoy! _

  • Lago di Garda (Lake Garda) is the largest lake in Italy. Its northern part is surrounded by mountains, of which the Monte Baldo range (on the eastern shore of the lake, shown far on the left side of this photograph) is the most popular by tourists. / After waiting hours for free parking space and cable-car on a sunny day in August, one has to share Monte Baldo with crowds of other tourists. That seemed very unappealing to us so we better decided to climb Monte Stivo located to the north-east of the lake. / 2059 meters above the sea level, Monte Stivo offers stunning view of the Lake Garda as well as many beautiful mountains including the Adamello and Brenta groups. Taken in August 2001 on a cheap negative using a 28-80mm kit lens, the original photograph was not really rich in details; therefore I have applied the watercolor filter to improve the perception of overall sharpness in the image. Finally, I have converted it to black & white. As you can see, there are some blown-out highlight in the lower clouds, that were much brighter than the rest of what we have seen. I have decided not to retouch the blown-outs to keep the (maybe a bit surreal) mood of the image.

  • Early summer in Montafon valley, Austria. The two photographs show challets in Gargellen, and view in the opposite direction, Ritzenspitzen. Color versions: More photographs from Montafon:
