Soft morning light shining through the window of my cousin’s apartment in New York City, USA. I took this photo with a 30 year-old Pentax Spot-O-Matic camera and pushed the development process to increase the grain in the film. The photograph, I hope and think, captures the calm before the storm of everyday life. This image was scanned from the original negative on Kodak Tri-X film.

While I was on a mental health board, I made a ton of trips to NY alone. At night I’d set up my camera and tripod and shoot out of my hotel window. One night it started raining. At the time, I was living in New Mexico and found the view of the rain fascinating.

New York City Traffic. A Winter night in the Upper West Side on Central Park West. The Tourists have long since left Strawberry Fields and the first signs of snow have decended. This image is a B/W with color enhanced to show the motion of the City.

I was in New York recently on business and managed to find a little time to wander around. I walked up to Rockefeller Center and took some shots. Unfortunately I didn’t have a tripod so the night shots were a little difficult, but I did manage to get this one of Radio City Music Hall. I really like the Deco feeling of this shot. I wish there had been just a bit more steam or fog. The shot was originally in color, and while the signage looked nice I think the black & white makes a better image. I did some minor dodging and burning to darken some of the darker areas a little more and lighten some of the lighter areas. I added a platinum tint and some film grain. Taken in New York several years ago in a very cold and snowy February. / Looking down I think 6th Avenue with Central Park behind me, I was trying to capture the birds as they flocked around the buildings when this wonderful lorry drove into view, that the dream of the city where fortunes can be won and lost in the grime and glamour of the city that never sleeps.
