A collage of Skipping Girl taken from a photo I took of a non working neon sign. It’s a great melbourne icon located in Victoria Street and as it doesn’t work I decided to re-inject the colour back into it. This is part of a series of works based around this very cool little sign.

I did this when I was teaching youth-at-risk and got my students to ‘tag’ it. / It’s about how young people are dazzled by the lights then end up in the back alleys. Our program was to guide them in a positive manner through ART then take their discipline, confidence, talent, skills aquired to finishing what they left behind or lost. Majority who finished the course of 8 months went on to finsih their high school, entered Unversity or some college. These were tough street ‘kids’ who had talent in Art but never realized what they had; something that made them special and unique.

The Elizabeth Street entrance of St James Station in Sydney has been maintained in its original condition as a heritage site with the neon Château Tanunda sign dated at c1938. This is my homage to Neon Genesis: Evangelion, the anime series. If you haven’t seen it, you should check it out, if only for the fantastic art style/design and typography. This design is a re-creation, and slight re-imagining of an image of the face of one of the ‘angels’ in the show. Enjoy.
