Graffiti is a temporary communication from the author due to the elements and indeed, local government efforts to clean it up. “Blossoming with Age” Photography & Artwork / by Holly Kempe © Sitting at the foot of the rainforest covered Great Dividing / Range in far north tropical Queensland is the small / rural town of Kennedy well known for its sugarcane and / banana farming. Some of these farms have stayed in a / family for well over a century (a long time in this area’s / short settlement history) and the buildings and farming / machinery left in paddocks attest to their age. / Having to stop my car at a dead end of a dirt track, I / spotted this treasured farm hand in a far off field. Not / wanting to disturb the grazing cattle nearby nor the ire of / the farmer by trespassing on his property, I shot this / photo from my car. As I gazed on the old beast I thought / how completely peaceful and restful it looked in its bed / of blossoming flowers and canopy of tin, free to while / away its aging years at one with nature. “Old age has a great sense of calm and freedom.” / ~ Plato

This piece is an acrylic with a bit of colored pencil and graphite to highlight. The lines, and reflections are indicative of the time I would spend as a child staring at ceilings intrigued by the unintentional pictures formed by the texture. “It’s the tiny details that I live for. Finding the unintentional in my paintings is a delight.
