  • I took this shot at the Virginia Safari Park in Natural Bridge, Virginia. They have a 180 acre area where you can drive through, with all sorts of animals that roam around free. The Black Buck Antelope is naturally found in the semi desert plains and the open forests throughout India. Males stand about 32 inches at the shoulder and weight about 90 pounds, and can reach speeds of about 45 mph. This guy just wanted a nice rest. • This was taken at the Lion & Rhino Park in Johannesburg, South Africa. The same place Mischief was taken. While the brown lion cub was playfully naughty at 4 months old, this white lion cub could barely be bothered moving. He was 3 months old at the time. He and his 3 siblings were content sitting in the shade, watching the brown lion cubs kick up a dust storm around us. Amazing what 1 month can make to behavioural differences! All these cubs would have grown close to their full size by now and would be in the return to the wild program, teaching them how to hunt, kill and survive out there. The program is designed to help keep the white lion away from extinction, which sadly, it is dangerously close to at the moment. • Featured in Animal Photography November 2009 Featured in Exotic Mammals September 2009 Featured in Animal Portraits September 2009 Featured in Animal Kingdom September 2009 Featured in Primate Art September 2009 Western lowland gorillas are endangered, but they remain far more common than their relatives, the mountain gorillas. They live in heavy rain forests, and it is difficult for scientists to accurately estimate how many survive in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. / Female gorillas give birth to one infant after a pregnancy of nearly nine months. Unlike their powerful parents, newborns are tiny—weighing four pounds (two kilograms)—and able only to cling to their mothers’ fur. These infants ride on their mothers’ backs from the age of four months through the first two or three years of their lives. • Featured in Primate Art September 2009 / Featured in Animal Kingdom September 2009 Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, sharing more than 98 percent of our genetic blueprint. Humans and chimps are also thought to share a common ancestor who lived some four to eight million years ago. Chimpanzees live in social communities of several dozen animals, and can habituate themselves to African rain forests, woodlands, and grasslands. Although they normally walk on all fours (knuckle-walking), chimpanzees can stand and walk upright. By swinging from branch to branch they can also move quite efficiently in the trees, where they do most of their eating. Chimpanzees usually sleep in the trees as well, employing nests of leaves. Chimps are generally fruit and plant eaters, but they also consume insects, eggs, and meat, including carrion. They have a tremendously varied diet that includes hundreds of known foods. Females can give birth at any time of year, typically to a single infant that clings to its mother’s fur and later rides on her back until the age of two. Females reach reproductive age at 13, while males are not considered adults until they are 16 years old. Information source: http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/chimpanzee.html

  • Featured in “Going Coastal” November 2009 This female Black Bear came down to feed along the rocky coastline with her two cubs. We had been fishing all morning in the Tlupana Inlet (Nootka Sound) on the west coast of Vancouver Island and were returning to our base for lunch in the pouring rain with a couple of Chinook Salmon on board that we had caught earlier, when we spotted her. As we got closer and she heard us approaching, she sent her cubs back up the mountain side and watched us warily whilst getting to grips with a starfish she had caught. / We moved in a little closer so that I could get a few photographs but as we did so she lost interest in the starfish as she could smell the salmon we had on board and decided that these would probably make a more satisfying meal! At one point it looked as though she was actually going to make a leap towards the boat so we backed off to a safer distance whilst I continued to photograph. / For a change I’ve given this one a little artistic touch-up in Photoshop CS3. Canon 20D / 1/60sec f6.3 ISO 200 / Focal length 100mm

  • Aristotle once said the elephant was “the beast which passeth all others in wit and mind”. Unfortunately, they are now increasingly threatened by poaching and human intrusion into their habitat. The original artwork measures 19×12.5 inches and was created with ink pen and liquid copper leaf, with a little bit of colored pencil work around the eye. I used acid-free Canson Mi-Teintes paper in an Oyster color. View more of my artwork at www.lynnetteshelley.com
