The iron lighthouse was built in 1871 and was originally located at the entrance to Ulladulla harbour. The first Lighthouse keeper was William Gambell, an ex-sea captain who lived with his wife and family in a slab house on the beach. The lighthouse was re-erected to Ulladulla’s south headland – Warden’s Head in 1889.

Bodie Lighthouse Interior (Looking Up) “Of all the early North Carolina lighthouses, the Bodie Island Lighthouse had the rockiest beginnings. Disagreements over the location delayed the building of the first lighthouse for ten years. After one year, one side was a foot lower than the other causing the lamp to stop functioning; attempts to prop up the lighthouse were unsuccessful. So, in 1859 a 90-foot-high brick tower was built as a new Bodie Island Lighthouse. In the early years of the Civil War, this lighthouse was controlled by Union troops. However, in 1861, Confederate troops slipped into the lighthouse and blew it up. The current Bodie Island Lighthouse was built in the model of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse, except for having an exposed granite base. Even this lighthouse had a difficult beginning. Soon after it began operation in 1872, a flock of geese flew against the light, breaking glass panes and damaging the lens. Today, the lighthouse is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The lighthouse itself is not open, but the old keeper’s house is open as a visitor’s center and museum.” Information was obtained from the NC Division of Tourism “

The Cape Otway lighthouse, at the bottom of Cape Otway, off the Great Ocean Road in western Victoria (Australia). I did so, and have received favourable response. As such I have replaced the original that was here with the reworked image.

A black and white with vignetting version of my image of Port Fairy Lighthouse. This is one of my all time favourite photographs so I thought I would share it. It was taken on a point and shoot about 3 years ago so is not available for larger prints. The flowers in the foreground of this photo have a story of their own. The bulbs of the irises were planted by the first lighthouse keepers in the garden of the long since ruined keepers house. All that remains of the house is a portion of the garden. The iris bulbs come up every spring as a reminder of what once was. Colour version is also available. This is how it looks in card form: I have this image on my wall using a black matte and charcoal frame which looks absolutely amazing and sets off the black and white image well.

Scanned from a 6×6 ‘Blad negative. The print is ‘much’ softer, but it seems to work better on screen much punchier.

An edit of a photo i took at Cape Otway Lighthouse just of Victoria’s Great Ocean Road in Australia a few months ago on the 28th of February 2008. HDR’d in Photomatix from one RAW file . Found a pic of some birds i took at Elwood Beach a while ago and added them in Photoshop. Some tweaking was also done in Lightroom including the black and white conversion and above is the end result. The Lighthouse is just one of many beautiful attractions in the Great Otway National Park. CAPE Otway Lightstation is the oldest, surviving lighthouse in mainland Australia. The light, which has been in continuous operation since 1848, is perched on towering sea cliffs where Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean collide. For thousands of immigrants, after many months at sea, Cape Otway was their first sight of land after leaving Europe. On a wet evening in Whitby this long exposure manages to smooth out the water and soften the detail in the sky. I have converted this to black and white but it wouldn’t have made much difference if I hadn’t. This long-exposure captured the mood of the evening well. Because of the weather conditions the town was deserted and quiet. The rain had reduced visibility and the only thing that can be seen on the horizon is the light from a distant boat which had been accentuated by the long-expsoure.

The world is about to end because of global warming. Temperatures are soaring, ice is melting, glaciers are retreating, seas are rising, and we’re all going to fry. We’re all up to here with worry about it. The Royal Society says there’s no longer any room for scientific doubt about it. Britain’s Chief Scientist says it’s a bigger threat than global terrorism. / Every global warming sceptic is denounced as clinically insane. Every developed nation wags its finger at every other (well, ok then, at America) and tells it to Emit Less. Every politician and B-list celebrity now anxiously measures his or her carbon footprint. Every British schoolchild is now drilled to believe that man-made global warming is a Fact along with poverty and the existence of Belgium.
