This photo of a silhouetted cross against a beautiful sunset was taken in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada right across the street from my house. My then girlfriend, now wife pointed out the cross, so I got down to ground level and took the shot. Loch of the Lowes lies in the beautiful scottish borders between Moffat and Selkirk. It flows into nearby St Mary’s loch (with its thriving sailing club) past old Tibbieshiels inn, hostelry and overnight stop for walkers on the southern upland way crossing Scotland. Overlooking the north end of the loch is a monument to James Hogg – the Scottish Poet known as the Ettrick Shepherd, friend and contemporary of Sir Walter Scott. Taken 4/3/08 (untouched) with a pocket fuji finepix A500 (There is a 2nd loch of the lowes further north in Perthshire, complete with osprey viewing centre – but you can see the wonderful fish eagle hunting here too if you are lucky!) Lanyon Quoit is a dolmen from prehistoric times. Likely it was a grave, but it’s definite that it had some ritual significance to the people who built it. Built by peoples long gone but hardly forgotten. We still marvel at these standing stones today. It’s significantly altered from its original form. It was knocked down by a storm and rebuilt by locals in the early 1800’s. It’s much shorter than its previous form and is one leg short of the four it originally had. Cornwall, United Kingdom

The Cheetah The fastest land animal in the world, the cheetah is a marvel of evolution. The cheetah’s slender, long-legged body is built for speed. Cheetahs are tan in color with black spots all over their bodies. They can also be distinguished from other big cats by their smaller size, spotted coats, small heads and ears and distinctive “tear stripes” that stretch from the corner of the eye to the side of the nose. Found mostly in open and partially open savannah, cheetahs rely on tall grasses for camouflage when hunting. They are diurnal (more active in the day) animals and hunt mostly during the late morning or early evening. Only half of the chases, which last from 20-60 seconds, are successful. Cheetahs knock their prey to the ground and kill with a suffocating bite to the neck. They must eat quickly before they lose the kills to other bigger or more aggressive carnivores. Cheetahs are also typically solitary animals. While males sometimes live with a small group of brothers from the same litter, females generally raise cubs by themselves for about a year.
