  • I don’t know if this is factual, fictional, or a bit of each, but the most commonly circulated story about how the ladybug got its name is quite interesting. According to that account, quite a long time ago in Europe, a small farming village was experiencing unprecedented problems with insects that kept devouring the crops. Faced with certain ruin, the peasants fell to their knees and began to beg the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary to send help in their calamity. Their simple faith was soon rewarded. The farmers began to notice a change in the crops. The dying foliage started to revitalize and greenness once again appeared on the landscape. Something was definitely reversing the devastation. As they looked closer, the farmers noticed small red bugs with black dots festooning their tiny concave, shell-like, bodies. Like soldiers called in to battle, they were eating the culprits—destructive aphids. “Our Lady’s bugs, Our Lady’s beetles,” the grateful villagers proclaimed. Eventually, as the small insects became a familiar part of their lives, the people shortened their name to ladybugs, the term by which they are still known today and perhaps one of the reasons why they are so well-loved. Whatever the case, ladybugs are the allies of farmers; they are tiny soldiers that patrol the fields making sure there will be food on the table for everyone.

Original is available for purchase, please contact me for enquiries.

  • Finally I’m seeing butterflies and usually by now I’ve seen / quite a few…but usually the yellow ones—but today this polka dot one appeared on the scene and stayed around but wouldn’t sit still for barely a second…like to drove me crazy capturing this image. “To make a wish come true, / whisper it to a Butterfly. / Upon these wings it will be taken to / heaven and granted, for they are the / messengers of the Great Spirit.” / ~~Native American Legend /

  • Featured in Friends of Bangor and North Down Camera Club, Northern Ireland August 23, 2009. Best Viewed Full Size This little image is only one of nearly 400 (yes, I discovered the rapid fire thingie on the new camera over the weekend) I took of these most amazing creatures. It means the world to me that I was able to play with them as I’ve never seen a Monarch in our garden in Maryland. The “lawn” to the cabin next to ours on Blue Knob Mountain in Claysburg Pennsylvania has been left uncut all summer … and the most incredible wild vegetation has grown up. One is this pretty purple flowered stalk … which happen to be very much beloved by the Monarch Butterflies. Image taken with the Nikon D300 and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens at shutter speed 1/160, aperture f/10.0, exp 0.00, iso 800. Focal length 220mm.

  • This is my work in progress entry to the Social Conscience challenge over in the T-Shirt Revolution Group. I am not entirely sure about the design, so feedback would be greatly appreciated. My concept is based around the imminent censorship of Australia’s internet. If you haven’t heard, the Australian Government has put forward a plan to implement ISP level filtering of internet use, which cannot be opted out of. The plan is supposed to tackle child pornography, which is of course a very important thing to do, but is this really the best way to do it? The filtering is said to slow internet speeds drastically and block harmless and legal websites. I read somewhere (but can’t find the source) that a website with information about breast cancer had been blocked by the test filters… The filtering has been closely likened to China’s censorship, and is further painting Australia as a ‘nanny state’. The whole thing makes me really angry, so i figured it would make a good topic for the challenge. For more information, here is a useful link: / http://nocleanfeed.com/ PS. The image i have used was part of a poster that was created in my honours project last year at uni. The concept of the image related well to what i wanted to do here, so i decided to re-use it. • Another entry from my leather moleskin journal. This was a reflection on how we’ve all got so many untold stories. I don’t want to go to my grave without passing on my stories that are worth passing on especially if there’s a chance those stories could affect or help another in any positive way. The same goes for my whole family…. I don’t want them passing without me finding out their important untold stories. I still don’t know half as much as I’d like to know about my Grandfather’s prisoner of war days and he passed many a year ago. So that story is with my Dad now and once he’s gone the story will be too. Perhaps I’ll sit down with Dad soon and write it all down? And then there’s so many of my own personal stories that only I, myself know. One’s that Im’ just not ready to share with another yet… whether emotional, physical or spiritual I just can’t put them out there just yet. I am sure one day though I’ll probably be ready to share them. What untold stories do you have that you’d like to make sure get passed on before you die?

  • I edited my original illustration of Carnival Skull to enter the ‘Happy’ challenge. / So I guess this is a self portrait if I were a heavily tattooed sugar skull! / If this represented my happiness on a scale from 1-10, it would have to be a 10..extremely jolly!
