This is a collaboration I did with Geoff Coleman.. http://www.redbubble.com/people/geoffcoleman thanks geoff…loved this photo!! this piece was probably the one that took me the longest to create ever… the lighting was difficult to blend in with geoff’s photo and each test render took over an hour … there were over 30 test renders, in addition to the 20 odd hours i spent on lighting and surfaces … i was pretty determined to make it work.

‘Iliki’ Spirit of Aloha is a mixed media production on canvas textured paper using ink, pastel, acrylic and charcoal. My darling ‘Illiki’ was inspired by James Michener’s novel ‘Hawaii’ and the beautiful young hawaiian girl who is one of the charming characters early on in the story. I was completely swept away during the reading of this incredible novel, highly recommended reading :D I think that the song Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole really relates to the story …. as his melancholy voice is so melodically accompanied by the ukelele….. it reminds me of the story of Iliki the young hawaiian girl, who leaves her island when still very young…. forever she haunted the mind of the young minister missionary who tended her and taught her in his first days on the island, he forever wondered how she was faring in the civilised world, having been taken away on a ship by the white men. He felt a certain special kind of fatherly love for this girl, and it tore his heart that she was so clever and cottoned on so well to the new english language, and customs he would teach her, as well as the scriptures…but she was a wild thing, and never one to be ‘pigeon-holed’ or contained… he set her free and never saw her again. I have the privilege to work with some of the most talented models and dancers in the world. Giulia is by far one of my favorites and a dear friend as well. To achieve these images takes a lot of work, on a normal day we can shoot over 400 jumps to get the best images. Each jump has to be adjusted to look right in the camera, and we experiment with different angles and lighting set-ups as well. There are no trampolines, she jumps from and lands on the floor. The model is Giulia Piolanti, and Italian gymnast turned modern dancer turned Cirque du Soleil performer, and she will be appearing in a new Cirque productiion in Tokyo later this year.
