Ink, some graphite and charcoal on paper. Robert Johnson was truly the grandfather of blues. Inspiring such musicians as Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters and the Rolling Stones. His music has deeply affected my love for blues and music in general. My portrait of Robert is a small tribute to the amazing body of work he produced. Through every layer of pencil and every stroke of my hand, I tried to capture the essence of Mr. Johnson onto paper. I depicted every detail in my portrait, from the old curtain hung behind him to the design on the blanket he sits on. Each pinstripe was painstakingly reproduced as well as the weathering on his guitar. My desired end result is that you will feel like you are looking at an aged photo of Robert Johnson. I believe when you truly study this piece you will hear his music and see the richness of his character portrayed in through my pencils. Charcoal on mylar drafting film, 22×18” The drafting film is translucent, so I have used a moonstone Canson pastel paper under the film for color. I work on the frosted side of the paper for tooth. The mylar lends a lovely soft effect, beautiful for rendering the translucence of skin. It is a tricky surface to work on, just a flick of the finger brings you back to the clean surface. I load my fingers with charcoal to get the soft gradations of tone. There were several unusual spiritual moments for me while working on this self-portrait. One was a near out of body experience while on a walk in the park, which spurred me to write my first poem in 30 years. A few days later, I started seeing black butterflies. Not so unusual in summer I suppose, but I don’t remember seeing this particular type in Chicago, maybe it’s due to our changing weather patterns. The odd thing was that I had just found a photo of a black butterfly online at RedBubble at http://www.redbubble.com/people/knightingail/art/1336726-1-black-beauty Then a black butterfly fluttered around me several times while I was walking that same afternoon! It happened again a couple of days later, this black butterfly flying in loops around me as I walked. Odd that the only black ones I saw, also seemed to notice me as well! Almost like they knew of my transformation. So, that inspired my second poem, “Black Butterfly” and I decided to incorporate a black butterfly into the drawing. The piece was made to fit a vintage distressed frame I found at my local antique shop. The Poem: Bemusing muse Black butterfly Came through the ether Mystical wings Encircled me along the way Enraptured on a summer day Music painted on the sky Black butterfly Blown in from far off dust Astral soul Dressed in stardust Black butterfly Draw me perfect Emergent from this coal black shell Wet wings spread in joy to stand Transformed Flawless at the artist’s hand Evanescent passion lies In our wavelengths intertwined Black butterfly Never caught Light gently in the mind Bring luminous thought (c) Alice McMahon White 2008

“Psyche” self portrait, from the Black Butterfly series. Oct 1, 2008, charcoal/pastel on mylar with under-drawing on grey pastel paper 26×22” Mounted in a vintage frame. The myths of the Greek goddess Psyche exemplify a woman’s search for authentic personal growth, a reminder that the integration of our experiences, however sad or frightening they may be, matures and transforms us, like the symbol of the butterfly emerging into the light from its dark cocoon. The butterfly in the drawing is from the reference photo I captured in Ireland – the Irish peacock butterfly. Psyche is a personification of the soul and was represented in ancient Greek mythology as a butterfly. The lily is my business logo symbol – for peace and annunciation. It also was inspired in this scale by Georgia O’Keefe’s flower paintings and their feminine connotations.

A tribute to The Goddess Marilyn, from my “Black Butterfly” series. From a reference photograph of the last sitting by Bert Stern. Charcoal and pastel on mylar drafting film, 20×16” The butterflies in this case symbolize the artist’s muse – and also are a premonition of the death of the goddess. The drafting film is translucent, so I have used a white paper under the film for brightness on this ethereal subject. I work on the frosted side of the paper for tooth. The mylar lends a lovely soft effect.

Model: Bubbler Brett Manning SYMBOLISM: From the Black Butterfly series, charcoal on mylar drafting film, with white backing paper 19×32” From a reference photo self-portrait by Redbubble friend Brett Manning, aka brettisagirl. The piece is inspired by Brett’s artistic “muses” (the butterflies) art, fashion, design, illustration, drawing, her Frankie, coffee, chocolate, her kitties, her puppies, and 60’s music, especially Bob Dylan. The butterflies are “ideas” that flutter around her head. The necklace is a nod to fashion, and to the lyric in Bob Dylan’s tune of the same name. “The World’s Biggest Necklace” is also from Egyptian mythology. There are eleven butterflies, symbolic for myself and my ten siblings. “Isis” lyrics by Bob Dylan: I married Isis on the fifth day of May, / But I could not hold on to her very long. So I cut off my hair and I rode straight away / For the wild unknown country where I could not go wrong. I came to a high place of darkness and light. The dividing line ran through the center of town. I hitched up my pony to a post on the rise, / Went in to a laundry to wash my clothes down. A man in the corner approached me for a match. I knew right away he was not ordinary. He said, “Are you lookin’ for somethin’ easy to catch?” / I said, “I got no money.” He said, “That ain’t necessary. / “ We set out that night for the cold in the North. I gave him my blanket, he gave me his word. I said, “Where are we goin’?” He said we’d be back by the fourth. I said, “That’s the best news that I’ve ever heard. / “ I was thinkin’ about turquoise, I was thinkin’ about gold, / I was thinkin’ about diamonds and the world’s biggest necklace. As we rode through the canyons, through the devilish cold, / I was thinkin’ about Isis, how she thought I was so reckless.

Perseus was both the first of the Greek mythic heros as well as the slayer of Medusa. He helped establish the authority of Zeus and the twelve Olympians in mainland Greece. Somehow I always manage to find mythological roles for the pieces that strike me as surreal or regal or ‘classic’. To me, this is the boy the most talented Greek and Roman marble sculptors would battle for. His features are paramount. His soft, semi-curly hair is reminiscent of that possessed by the ‘beautiful gods’. He looks delicate yet determined, stoic and quietly courageous. To me, he’s a tenacious youth, blindly valiant as he stalks into Medusa’s lair only to surface with his bloody sword in one hand and a severed head of snakes in the other. And as a result of his valor he acquires a few of his victim’s most desirable traits—a head of wildly unruly hair and beauty enough to turn any onlooker to stone. Medusa’s death comes at the most inopportune time, for if she could only gaze at her rival she would go mad with infatuation.

It had been feeding on old cardigans and teddybears…” This is just a funny scenario I thought up. Kinda random. I am developing a story around this picture.

From the Black Butterfly series. Charcoal on mylar drafting film with white illustration board underlay, 24×30”. I started this 4 years ago, intending it to be an ink and watercolor wash piece. I never got up the nerve to finish it – it is quite large and I wasn’t very comfortable with watercolor. The references I used were photos of myself and my husband in our early 20’s. Symbolism: My husband is a musician, and the butterflies in the series are representative of the artist’s muse. All of the models for this series are artists from various disciplines (actress Marilyn Monroe is Aphrodite in one work). In this piece, the lilies and the intertwining branches are taken from works by Leonardo Da Vinci. The Celtic elements of triple spirals and knot work are symbolic of our three children, my Irish heritage, our intertwined lives and inspirations, and are also appropriate as a reminder of our journey to Ireland this past year.
