I Just found this quote on the web, which I thought I would share! If you’re photographing in color you show the color of their clothes – if you use black and white, you will show the color of their soul. (Unknown) - So true!
They’re here!!
They’re here!!

“You are reminded that under UK law, there are no restrictions on taking photographs in a public place or on photography of individuals, whether they are adults or minors. There is no right to privacy in a public place, although photographers are of course subject to the usual libel laws in the same way as any other citizen and should observe them. Equipment or film may not be confiscated, or images deleted by any person or officer unless a warrant for such action is issued. Any attempt without a warrant is considered assault under UK law“. This is a passage of text carried by a well known photojournalist to protect himself from confrontation with the public when taking street photography I am a big fan of street photography and photojournalism, I love to look at pictures that capture a moment in time of the reality that is around us everyday. I see the artistic quality in good street photography, I also see the historic significance of people attempting to capture life in this way. I believe it is a very important way of recording life as it happens, especially when it is unscripted and shot in a natural environment. That way there is no bias and no ulterior motive behind the image, just the image and how we personally choose to understand it. I however am constantly struggling with the ethics of photojournalism and street photography because there are 2 points of view. I feel sorry for those ‘personalities’ that the media latches on to and decides are ‘newsworthy’ and there to be ’in the public interest’ because this ultimately gives the press (in their eyes) the right to make sometimes disgusting and wholly unethical invasions into their private lives. I find this, at times, to be unsettling, especially after what happened to Princess Diana who ultimately lost her life to the intrusion of it by the press. When you now look at the treatment of celebrities such as Britney Spears or Amy Winehouse you worry that it is not long before a similar tragedy happens to them. I understand this is the price celebrities pay and they have a responsibility to be good role models however members of the press are more and more taking advantage of this. Yes these ‘photographers’ have their own name, ‘The Paparazzi’ and should, in theory be grouped separately just as trashy tabloids are grouped separately from the broadsheets. Unfortunately more and more it is the case that they are not in the eyes of the general public. The problem is the reputation and image of street photographers and photojournalists is being lumped together with ‘The Paparazzi’ by many of the general public and are being viewed with distain. The average Joe on the street is becoming more aware and suspicious of street photographers, often feeling a certain hostility towards SLR holding ‘snappers’. I added the text above to reassure those of us about our rights to photograph in public places and societies need to have these people. However we must also be aware of our responsibilities and the boundaries we must observe to avoid upsetting an already wary general public / Some of the photo’s I have included have been taken on the street, some without the subject being aware of the shot being taken. I’d be interested in what you all think about the ethical side of publishing these shots and whether they could be considered art, journalistic or simply an invasion of privacy? It has bothered me as to whether I should show them on Redbubble or not, what do you think? Alternatively please feel free to comment or debate about what I have said I’d love to hear your side of this argument. Ben

Jacqueline Baker was one of the first artists I added to my watch list. / She has wonderful and very emotive work, mostly in black and white. / She is one of the members of Art of the Middle East group. / My favorite work of her is The Adoration / / which I consider as one of the best works of art I have seen. / Here is some more of her inspiring work: / / I asked Jacqueline a few questions. 1. When and how you have started with your art? / I flirted very, very briefly with photography some years ago but it was only after the death of my nephew Martin in June 2007 that I took up photography seriously. I had volunteered to take some photographs at his funeral and when I presented them to my brother-in-law he silently wept as he looked at them. It was then, in that single life changing moment that I realised the power and impact that a photograph could have on someone else’s life. My brother-in-law and his wife were so grateful that I had captured this tragic event for them that it had a very profound effect on me. The way he looked at me and said thank you with his soul caused such a feeling of the deepest pleasure that amongst all that pain I will never forget it….i only wish the circumstances had been different. The ability to capture an image in a single moment of time and be able to move someone’s emotions held a fascination for me from that moment on. 2. What is your main inspiration and how has your art evolved? / I have always been fascinated with black and white photography, I think this stems from watching black and white films as a child and seeing black and white photographs of people and trying to read their emotions. One thing that will remain forever etched on my mind from my childhood was sitting and watching I think it was called ‘The World at War’ on my parents black and white television. For several weeks I remember I sat and watched on a Saturday morning the world blowing itself up with all the killing, cold blooded murder and genocide and I was horrified but fascinated at the same time at man’s inhumanity to man. Moving on in time I was fascinated by the black and white documentary style used by Steven Spielberg in his film ‘Schindler’s List’. The tones in the film are brilliant, the blacks are true blacks and the whites are true whites. I deeply, deeply admire the depth of the black and white that Spielberg captured with his choice of film. Because of this documentary style I found it to be one of the most emotional and inspirational accounts of what one man can do in the face of such horror. This appeals to my idealism. Idealists seek after truth and are very passionate people and so the images I have recorded with my camera nearly all hold some emotional channel for me, a way of speaking without talking. My main inspiration is a desire to understand fully the role of light (or lack of it) in black and white photography and so I constantly look on the internet and in books at the black and white photography of some of the great masters. I look also at the old painters that use light to create atmosphere in their paintings. I adore Rembrant’s use of a dark background with a single and sometimes smaller secondary light source to create a totally dramatic effect. It was this effect that inspired The Adoration, I focused the camera to read the light and this caused it to throw the background into darkness, this has been without a doubt my most popular image. I hope to create more images like this in time but I also like to experiment with lots of different styles so I’m not sure when I will do it…it will probably be a spontaneous thing, I’m like that, I will just suddenly decide to do something one day and then everything else gets thrown to one side. / My all time favorite photographer is Willy Roni his work is astounding and is so mesmerizing I can look and study it for hours, it’s so exquisite and a true visual feast for me. I also love the people shots of an old British photographer called Frank Sutcliffe (1853-1941) his work of everyday people going about their work in Whitby is again nothing short of exquisite. A more up to date photographer is Emil Schildt and his painting with light images are absolutely wonderful, I always feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven when I look at his work……sigh, thanks to Peter Zentjens for introducing me to his work! And a last one is a photographer that Ken Mucke introduces people to on his profile page and that is a wonderful man that goes by the name of Cole Thompson. If you get a chance to look at his work then please do so it is great! I just love any B&W work done by the old school who really knew their craft and spent hours in the dark room dodging and burning! 3. How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? For my home life I’ll let my husband Ron tell you in his own words LOL: “I was married once “ & my daughter Lizzie (16) says: “We can never leave the house quickly, the camera has to be charged and ready for any possible photos that could be taken, which is very annoying.” Abigail (10) says: / “I think my mum could spend a little bit more time with us because when she is taking photographs I feel she has gone and is no longer with us, I also feel happy for her that she has finally found a hobby.” Oops oh dear I’m back now….I think perhaps I need to spend some more time with my family….oh well at least they’re being honest…..I’ll have to sort that out when I’ve finished this! Ok where were we? I feel my photography allows me access to all kinds of situations that normally I wouldn’t have but I also feel (like most photographers) that I hide behind my camera. I experience the world through the viewfinder and I’m happy to do that. Without my camera I am a very private person, not in a horrible way but I don’t really enjoy the company of other people I usually find them very shallow. / Emotionally photography has been a life saver, I had all this pent up creativity and emotion that I really didn’t know what to do with it…it was either explode or implode so I chose the latter as I can’t stand violence. This resulted in a severe depression and the only thing I found any pleasure in was photography….the death of Martin being the beginning of the journey. / Spiritually I feel more fulfilled and closer to God, it is Him after all that gave me this gift and so it pleases me to know I am using it and I know it pleases Him that I am too! I have seen God use the gift he has given me to help heal women’s perception of themselves and that has been so rewarding! I hope that he will open doors to photograph the world in a more documentary way ie poverty or war etc. / Physically photography has helped as I’m now off and out looking for opportunities instead of depressed and hiding. / Financially LOL LOL that says it all, typical artist, I’m hoping eventually to grow in knowledge, experience, confidence and maybe one day a few more sales. 4. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble / particularly special or meaningful. Without a doubt Ken Mucke has been a strong influence in my time on RedBubble probably more than he realizes himself. I adore his work and hope one day to to reach his dizzy heights of absolute perfection. He has quietly helped me in the background to take my B&W work further and for that I acknowledge him here and say Thank you Ken from the bottom of my heart!!!! / I’m just gonna sneak one other in too…The other person that I simply love watching is Russell Klika, his work is so inspirational and so beautiful that I am quite, quite envious lol. He tells it as it is and it is as he tells!! He wants the world to see the beauty he sees in the people of war zones such as Iraq and his desire to tell the world what he sees is so passion driven that I find that I can’t wait for him to upload, I LOVE passionate people. 5. Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you. / The first is my all time absolute favorite and it’s Ken Mucke’s image The Last Tango it isn’t on RedBubble but he does have one similar called The Dance it’s just that The Last Tango is so special it’s breathtaking! / The second is by Russell Klika in his series called Iraq it is so poweful with such a sad little girl whose top is too big and the colors and framing are fantastic! / The third is by Jean M. Laffitau whose exquisite image wowed me when I first joined RB / The fourth is by Phillip French a powerful image about war / The fifth is by Enalu for me this is PASSION with a capital P I just adore the beauty and desire in this image, it is not posed and captures the desire in my heart…I’m so jealous hehe! /

One of the enjoyable things about Redbubble is that you get to discover fantastic photography and art that you’d never have come across otherwise. Finding others who think along similar lines is always good, but discovering others producing similarly themed work which easily sits amongst the top of its genre is hugely inspiring. With that in mind, below are examples of four photographers I feel produce consistently outstanding black & white seascape images. If you haven’t come across them yet, add them to your watchlist immediately :) GlennC / Joel Tjintjelaar / - Kevin Skinner / Jeff Masamori / This will hopefully be the first of regular features on the work of other photographers I admire on RB. Black & white is my passion so that’s the main focus just now, but I will look into other genres as well. This is the first time I’ve done this so hopefully the images display correctly! Donald.

I’ve posted this a few months ago, but I recently got a bubble mail from Nick who asked me about my B&W processing technique so i thought I’d post it again. It really is just an endless ramble (sorry about that!) but it does talk about one way i post process B&W. The other way is with the wonderful Nik plug in – Silver Effex pro. I hope this helps :) Mel.
Aloha!!! I’d like to take you behind the curtain and show you a member of redbubble that I don’t think many people have met yet or know of gottheshot / ....... / Although gottheshot has had a few features in groups, he’s never been featured on the Home Page, and yet he captures the most fabulous images and I really thought it’s a crime that his fabulous art is not being seen by more of us. / ....... His candid shots of people on the street, in parks, in Harajuku during his time in Japan are some of the most beautiful and poignant works I’ve seen in my travels and I’m really taken with them, you can tell he loves his subjects very much… I love talking to him about how he sees things and he explains so well, the thought process he goes through as he ponders how he’ll shoot a particular subject… it’s so very interesting, rewarding and revealing. I love his black and white photography, there is something just wonderful about it, that I can’t quite put into words…it’s elemental beauty at it’s best….but then you see the colour version and my mind is exploding with details and delighted by everything i see… there is one image in particular which i find “postcard-a-licious” called Caught in Kyoto which is the Geisha with the red umbrella and kimono below standing to the side, revealing white cherry blossom tree in full bloom… something so special about it, almost like selective colouring, but it isn’t. / ........ / gottheshot says and I quote: A boring 9-5 job keeps me away from the love of photography for most of the time but weekends and holidays are a chance to learn my new found hobby / again. I enjoyed trying to capture street photography in Japan and more recently just photographing landmarks in London. In the last couple of months my weekend hobby has been flower photography and bees in flight.. A very steep learning curve. I still find that I choose the wrong aperture or the wrong setting and lose the goal that I want out of a photo – practise makes perfect. With a bit of editing my photos are presentable enough to go on here. / ...... / I don’t want to give away all gottheshot’s surprises here in my journal, so why don’t you head on over and say hi to him, pop him on your watchlist and check out his beautiful inspirational works…another friend to befriend…a new person to inspire and be inspired by… It was actually Open Wide pictured below, that first caught my attention and as I continued to enjoy I came across gottheshots diverse range wonderful images /
