Most people who have children or grandchildren are familiar with the Itsy Bitsy Spider song. When I spotted this very tiny spider (which I almost missed seeing altogether because it was so miniscule), I thought immediately of that childhood song. I took its picture and in PS, I placed the lyrics of the song right alongside it in remembrance of all the times I sang this with my children as they were growing up and am still singing it with my grandson who is now four. This may be a Mabel Orchard Spider, but I’m not sure. The field guides say it is 1/8 inch long. If anyone knows what kind of spider this is, I’d appreciate a word from you.

My son and I just went out to check on the caterpillars again and this one we watched emerge from his cocoon. His wings are still wet in this photo. I removed the screen from the top of the jar and my son held his hand up by the opening, and the butterfly crawled up and onto his hand!! We set him back down into the jar to let his wings dry, then we’ll release him later!! This has been a wonderful experience, and one I will NEVER forget!! :-) / An update….. a successful release!! Thanks to ECGardner I now know the species of this beautiful butterfly,it’s a Gulf fritillaries. Thank you so much Erin!!! :) A Little Info: / Habitat: Open, sunny areas and disturbed sites such as old fields, roadsides, meadows, pastures, and fallow agricultural land. / Garden Abundance: Very high / Wingspan: 2.75 to 3.75” / Range: Throughout the southern half of the United States with occasional strays further north The Gulf fritillary is a medium-sized, orange butterfly with black markings and somewhat elongated wings. Its hindwings below are covered with numerous silvery, mercury-like patches that distinguish this butterfly from the similar and equally common monarch. Fond of open, disturbed sites, the Gulf fritillary frequently stops to nectar at colorful flowers and is a very common garden visitor. The Gulf fritillary is one of several migratory species in the Southeast. As fall approaches, adults begin a mass southward migration eventually arriving in the warm confines of South Florida to overwinter. Female Gulf fritillaries deposit small, yellow eggs singly on the leaves or tendrils of the host plant. The mature larva is bright orange with conspicuous black spines. Although the larvae are solitary feeders, they often occur in very large numbers and can quickly defoliate passionflower vines. For this reason, gardeners may wish to occasionally “thin” or remove some larvae to insure that there is enough food to go around for the other hungry mouths, and enough leaves to keep the vine alive. The pupa (or chrysalis) is light brown and closely resembles a dead leaf.

Happy Halloween I guess ;c) Shot this with an analogue SLR (Canon EOS 33) and a DIgital Lense to it (so the lenses make this black frame as they’re too small for full format) ... Kinda experimental, but like how it came out… The Black and White film by the way has run out of date for 5 years ;c) Thus it’s a bit washed out, but I kinda like the effect, too :D

I could see her struggling to climb back to her corner. The walls were slick.

Guess I am getting softer as I get older. Spiders don’t scare me anymore.
