  • Birkenhead Priory
    by PhotogeniquE IPA

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Birkenhead Priory was founded about 1150 for the Benedictines and is the oldest standing building on Merseyside. Parts of the site are listed buildings of Grade I and II and the priory is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument. / / In 1317 the monks from Birkenhead Priory were granted ferry rights by Edward II. This allowed them to build a house in what is now Water Street to store their corn. The house was also used by travellers for shelter if the weather was too bad for the ferry to cross the River Mersey. / / The priory’s chapter house is consecrated as an Anglican church, with a chapel dedicated to the training ship HMS Conway. There is also a museum detailing the history of the site. / / St Mary’s Tower was originally part of Birkenhead’s first parish church, opened in 1821 in the grounds of the priory. / / Redevelopment of the area from 1925 resulted in a large number of residential housing within the parish being cleared to make way for the construction of the first Mersey Tunnel. An expansion of the Number 5 dry dock at the adjacent Cammell Laird shipyard in the 1960’s resulted in the church losing a significant portion of its graveyard. Subsequent redevelopment of the approach roads to the Mersey Tunnel effectively cut off the church from most of what remained of its parish, further dwindling the congregation. / / St. Mary’s Church closed in 1974 and was partly demolished a year later, for reasons of safety. Only the former church tower and parts of the outer walls were retained in situ. The tower has since been refurbished and is dedicated to those who died on HMS Thetis. / / The churchyard contains the burial vault of the Laird family, which includes John Laird (1805-1874), Birkenhead’s first Member of Parliament and co-founder of the adjacent Cammell Laird shipbuilding company. / / The name Birkenhead is possibly from the Old English bircen meaning birch tree, of which many once grew on the headland which jutted into the river near the Priory itself. / / More on the Priory here / / © photogenique (dave peddie): using this image for any purpose and in any way, without prior permission, may lead to legal action. / / Do check out puffling’s growing portfolio / / / /

  • U-534
    by PhotogeniquE IPA

    US$3.42–US$91.20

For the Rusty, Crusty and Falling to Bits Group / / They don’t come much more rusty and crusty than this. / / U-534, a German type IXC/40 submarine was sunk by Allied forces in 1945. 48 years later, in 1993, she was raised from the seabed between Denmark and Sweden. She is the only U-boat to have been recovered after being sunk by the Allies. / / This photo shows her on the side of Birkenhead docks, close to where the largest collection of preserved 20th century warships in Europe used to be before, in a monumentally short-sighted decision, the collection was forced to close through lack of funding and council support in 2006. / / It is planned that she will be chopped into four sections, moved to a new site in Birkenhead, and made into a more touristy attraction in 2008. / / © photogenique (dave peddie): using this image for any purpose and in any way, without prior permission, may lead to legal action. / / Do check out Fadil Basymeleh’s growing portfolio / / / /

  • Decay: wreckage
    by Tony Moore

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Birkenhead docks used to be a bustling place, boats coming and going, off loading and loading up, dock workers and cranes running up and down. Now it’s derelict with only signs of it’s former life. Soon life will recover and developers will move in and take over. Oh what fun.

  • Birkenhead park bridge
    by kim Davitt

    US$3.42–US$28.50

Taken today 9th April 2008 This park boasts itself to be the first public park in Britain. / The infamous Central park in New york was designed around the features and ideas that where found in this park. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, Birkenhead Park is acknowledged to be the first publicly funded park in Britain. The concept was to create an idealised countryside landscape of open meadows, naturalistic woodland belts and beautiful lakes, which are shaped to appear as sinuous rivers with views across to features such as the Boathouse and Swiss Bridge. It is thought that his design was the model for many parks around the world, including Central Park, New York. Following a £11.25 million restoration scheme, the park was officially re-opened in June by, Birkenhead-born actress, Patricia Routledge CBE. A VIP ribbon-cutting performed at the park’s famous listed gatehouse officially marked the end of the major renovation scheme which has seen the park’s famous Swiss Bridge, Boat House and Grand Entrance restored, along with new bridges, paths, and railings. Much of the original planting has also been restored, reinstating the park’s status as a national treasure. One of the most exciting aspects of the scheme is a new £1million glass pavilion – a brand new visitor facility with café and exhibition gallery. There is so much to see and do in Birkenhead Park, including a large adventure playground for children, 2 cricket clubs, tennis courts, bowling greens, football pitches and fishing. (Please note permits are still required to fish in the park.)
