Nothing compares to the experience of visiting a concentration camp, especially one of the most well known. I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of Auschwitz II – Auschwitz Birkenau, scenes of desolation stretched on forever. All that remains of hundreds of barracks buildings are the brick chimney stacks, as in this shot, they go on as far as the eye can see.

An indescribable feeling.

Detail, Holocaust Memorial, Birkenau Concentration Camp, Poland. This memorial lies at the end of the railway line which brought one and a half million people, mostly Jews but including Roma, Sinta and many others, to their deaths at the hands of the SS at this and its sister camp at Auschwitz, about a mile away.

Auschwitz II, Birkenau. The end of the line for so many souls, now a permanent memorial to a most horific time in world history.

The remains of the concentration camp buildings that were bombed by the Nazis to hide the horror that took place at Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, Poland

-
Auschwitz II, Birkenau. The view from the ruins of crematorium V out onto land that was referred to as the ‘open air crematorium’. I was moved by how green the grass is a fight back from beyond that is in some very small way a comfort.
