As per the title, this is a ‘Cairns Birdwing’ butterfly (male I believe). I loved the colour and also the fact that he’s actually quite large (think length of your hand from fingertip to wrist). Enjoy!

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Cairns Birdwing Butterfly (Ornithoptera priamus) Australia’s largest butterfly, the males are green, yellow and black, the larger females black, yellow and white. The caterpillars are dark-brown with red-banded fleshy spines. They fly by day and hold their wings out when feeding. Males tend to stay in the canopy and may set up territories around larval food plants, ready to mate with newly-emerging females. Females spend most of their time close to the ground looking for plants to lay their eggs on. Adults suck up nectar with their coiled, straw-like proboscis. Caterpillars feed on native aristolochia vine leaves. They inhabit Tropical rainforests, parks and gardens.

The Cairns Birdwing Butterfly lives in tropical rainforests between Mackay and Cooktown in north-east Queensland, Australia. It is most often seen flying in the canopy of the rainforest. / The destruction of tropical rainforest has led to a decline in the population of the Cairns Birdwing Butterfly and it is now a protected species. / See Australasian Regional Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria / http://www.arazpa.org.au/Cairns-Birdwing/default.aspx

I was very fortunate to come across a pair of mating Birdwing butterflies in my travels recently. I have to admit it was in a butterfly sanctuary rather than in the wild, but it made the experience no less enjoyable! These guys are breathtakingly beautiful with their wings open….
