Getting to know the stars is an important part of landscape photography. Using a compass and G.P.S I was able to pinpoint the South Celestial Star. Because of the rotation of the earth, using a six hour exposure gives the feeling of the stars trailing around this point. I used a 5 million candle power flashlight to illuminate the sand dune. Because of the massive size of the dune I had to climb an adjacent dune and paint the light on from there. Camera – Fuji Gx617 / Film – Fuji Velvia
This is woop-woop.The back of beyond. The infamous Birdsville Track. Further down from here is a monument to the poor Page family whose car broke down in 1963 only 100km along the Birdsville Track. Mum, Dad and the three kids bravely embarked on the journey in the blistering heat. No water. No shade. Hand in hand. Their bodies were found, one by one, along the track. Shockingly dehydrated.

Outback Austarlia here on the Birdsvell Track, in this desert you get to drink eat camp and enjoy a hot natuaral spa bubbling up from the ground from the Great Artsian Basin. / Venus shines in clear desert air. While here during the day we watched as a 3 mustering helicopters touched down next to thepub…the guy’s came in for a couple of drinks, enjoyed a talk with us all around the bar and then back out and lifted off.
Along the Birdsville Track is Mungerannie, where you can get fuel, food, a beer and a camp site for the night. In addition a natural hot spa rises from the great Artsian Basin for any traveller to enjoy.
Wrens are not easy to photograph so I was very pleased with this series of varigated fairy wrens that I captured while at Mungeranie along the Birdsville Track.

For most of the time its just bare infertile red sand, but life springs after the smallest amount of rain. The first of 1,113 dunes in the Simpson Desert,Big Red stands as the biggest.
