I was out with my dog earlier today and saw three somethings in the woods behind the neighbors’ house. They were large, grey (blending in very well with the branches), and waddled. Yes, waddled, but not quite like a duck. I was shocked, and couldn’t exactly figure out what these somethings were. I realized they were birds, of course, and obviously birds that did not fly, or they wouldn’t have been picking around a densely forested area. Certainly not three of them together. I was far away, at least 500 feet, so I couldn’t get that great of a view of what I was seeing. Quail? But they were so big! (Not that I know how big a quail is.) I’m five feet four inches, and they seemed to be about half my size. I thought maybe they looked like peacocks, except without the colors. That was when it occurred to me: perhaps these were wild turkies? I didn’t know Ohio had wild turkies, but I was very close to farms, and what wasn’t farm land in the area used to be farm land. If they weren’t wild at the start of their lives, they were now. Or perhaps they decended from turkey escapees. For the next month, until we move, I will be watching the woods carefully, ready to shoot those turkies – with my camera, that is. ~~If anyone has any idea of what kind of bird I saw, I’d love to know. Like I said, they were big, kind of grey-wood colored, three of them together and moving in a group, and they didn’t take to the air at all.
