This boobook owl was out hunting and had caught itself a frog to eat. North-east Victoria, Australia
I love these magnificent birds.:)
A captive Barn owl of Australia. The prominent facial disc acts as a radar dish and helps them to pinpoint the location of mice.
An image of a fast low swoop of an eagle owl, wouldn’t you hate to be the prey?
Tawny or Wood Owl, giving that knowing look, Wise old Owl!
Tawny Owl trying to make him/herself as inconspicuous as possible against a tree
Taken in our back yard in Northfield, Vermont, USA
This Elf Owl has captured a centipede, almost as long as itself. He is preparing this feast as an offering to his mate to feed to their young in the nest. Elf Owls are primarily insectivores, although they are known to take small reptiles also. Photo taken at our B&B this spring/early summer.
This shot shows our mated pair of Elf owls from this spring. Before the female begins to incubate her eggs, both male and female exit their nest cavity at dusk to forage. Often the female will wait on a perch near the nest and wait for the male to return with food to feed her. Once she begins tio incubate, he brings food to her at the nest cavity. In this photo, he has just presented her with a cockroach. Note the apparent size difference, the female on the right being larger than the male on the left.
As we are only about 10 miles, as the owl flies, from the Mexican border, the Spotted Owls that frequent the canyons of the “SKY ISLAND” mountain ranges of SE Arizona are of the race found in Mexico, and NOT part of the non-contiguous race of the Pacific NW. We are fortunate to have year-round access to a pair that nest in Miller Canyon of the Huachuca Mts., almost at our doorstep. The canyon is also renowned for the great fall colors of the oaks, sycamores and maples that are inter-mixed with the conifers of these mid-elevation mountains. We hiked the canyon this AM and got some fair shots of one of the pair in a autumn-colored maple tree.
A tawny frog mouth from the zoo as well. Couldn’t resist the stare he was giving me.
I love these little owl. They are so fun to watch. Shot in Marana, AZ 12-20-09.
