This Eastern bluebird female was in a frenzy in the treetops. A male sparrow had invaded her nest and she was beside herself as she helped her mate try to oust it from their territory. With lots of wing action, scolding and squawking, and divebombing, they were putting up a heck of a fight for the little nest so skillfully constructed from pine straw. There aren’t any eggs yet; hopefully the scuffle will be resolved and the sparrow will find a place to lodge under the M at McDonald’s or the A at Arby’s where he can fare just fine! P.S. Please view this photo in larger mode so you can better appreciate the delicate little balancing act as this female is standing on one leg, the other retracted and ready for flight as she divebombs the menacing sparrow!

Here they are, four baby Mockingbirds, the Texas State bird. I think they are adorable, some people don’t think so at this age. They are 1 day old, started hatching out 6/25/08, one by one.
Dad yellow warbler looks a little frustrated. He’s been running back and forth with bugs to feed his hungry 4, just dumped another load, and the kids are still complaining. The nest is in a wild rose bush thicket. Mom helps feed them too. Both mom and dad clean the nest of baby droppings. Dad flys away with them, but mom eats the droppings. Getting rid of the droppings probably reduces smells that would attract predators.
A female Eastern bluebird on her nesting box is a good way to illustrate the old adage, “Be it ever so humble there’s no place like home!”
A brown booby bird chick in his/her cliff top nest area, Christmas Island, Indian Ocean Territories, Australia. The chick is about a foot high with fluffy down feathers and light green coloured feet. At this age, the chicks are taller than their parents – The down feathers add height. He/she waits on the cliff top for the parent bird to return from a days fishing, and then dinner is served! The nest area is 20 square metres, packed with grasses, and bounded by sharp jagged rocks covered by grass. Taken with Canon 5d & 24-105mm lens @ f16, ISO 200, 1/600th sec, handheld, as is.
“Which is greater, the student or the teacher? / Which has greater understanding, the apprentice or the master? / Who is more admired, the instrumentalist or the composer? / We marvel at the wonderful works of creation such as the bird who makes a nest with all the intricate detail and weaving it’s construction, do we forget who it was that made the bird and gave it the ability? / Time to remember the “Master Craftsman” who shows his love in his creation.” This is a photo of a nest I found on my way to take my little girl to school. This photo is for my great friend George who wanted to see in more detail the construction of the nest, a beautiful talent we can see bird have. This photo is ‘as is’ straight from the camera.
