  • Black-headed gull Not really a black-headed bird, more chocolate-brown – in fact, for much of the year, it has a white head. It is most definitely not a ‘seagull’ and is found commonly almost anywhere inland. Black-headed gulls are sociable, quarrelsome, noisy birds, usually seen in small groups or flocks, often gathering into larger parties where there is plenty of food, or when they are roosting. / Where to see them The commonest inland gull, particularly in N England, Scotland and Wales. Large colonies along the south and east coasts of England. What they eat Worms, insects, fish and carrion.

  • What a difference a better processing program and some more experience in processing can have on a photograph! This photograph and Skippy & Willy were both photographed about the same time. Skippy & Willy was processd by S7RAW & Photoshop CS while this one was processed by Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3. Viva la difference! This iconic Aussie marsupial and his little feathered watchdog, (watchbird?), were photographed on a cliff top trail in the Diamond Head area of the Crowdy Bay National Park , near Laurieton , NSW, Australia, very early on a damp, grey summer morning. Skippy is a fine specimen of a female, (flyer), Macropus giganteus (Eastern Grey Kangaroo) and Willy is an equally fine specimen of Willy Wag Tail . • The Muscovy duck is so ugly it’s pretty! If you can get past the fleshy red lumps on its head, you can appreciate the variety of hues on its plumage, ranging from purple to emerald and shades in between. Its name is derived from “musk duck,” a term attributed to it because of its characteristic musky scent. This big fellow posed reluctantly for me at the edge of a lake in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Every now and then he gave me a piercing look as though he was none too happy about my presence in his territory.

  • These crow-sized woodpeckers drum on trees to claim territory and attract a mate; the loud heavy sound is as if the tree is being hit with a wooden mallet. Each member of a mated pair excavates several roosting cavities and may retire for the night in one of them. The male roosts in the current nesting cavity before the eggs are laid and afterward incubates them there at night. In flight both sexes show a large white patch on the base of the primaries as well as white underwing linings. / This guy I finally got a picture of today….I have been trying forever it seems…they are fairly prominent in the SE and only local in other places….SE Texas…. / Canon S5 IS / / FEATURED IN “SURVIVORS AND FRIENDS” GROUP, FEBRUARY 2009 / /

  • This is a female white headed woodpecker. I learned a lot from a new book I got. The male of this species has a bit of red on his head. Thanks for taking a peak. This little lady visited our campsite for a bit while we were at Yosemite camping. :)

  • I stumbled across 2 bald eagles today and a falcon…I was literally 1 foot away from them…one of the most exciting days of photography ever!!!

  • Yes, it does look a lot like my “Suspicious Chicken” one, doesn’t it? I didn’t think of that until I’d just finished drawing. BUT this chicken isn’t the same – it’s stumpier, for a start. And it’ll lay you eggs every day! It’s eggs look a bit like the bits of fluff you find in the washing machine door seal. And, strangely enough, that’s exactly where it leaves them! I know – it really is a remarkable coincidence.
