Despite their size, the Great Gray Owl’s (Strix nebulosa) diet consits almost exclusively of small rodents such as Lemmings and Voles. They kill their prey after catching it by biting or shaking it to break its neck. This assures that they will not get their eyes scratched out by a struggling meal swallowed whole, head first, a condition that would mean certain death to the owl.
