I was shocked and stunned when this male Eastern bluebird landed on the birdhouse with THIS for dinner! I didn’t know bluebirds were such skilled hunters; I have newfound respect ever since I took this photo for their cunning, their speed, and their power in nabbing prey as quick moving and elusive as skinks! Many thanks to Kimberly Palmer who nominated this image to Pay It Forward group; this is what Kimmie had to say about the photo: “I fell in love with this picture the first moment I saw it. I would like to nominate it for its beauty of the bluebird, and for the awesome detail…. and because this lovely bluebird captured a SKINK! This male bluebird is QUITE the hunter, I’d say. When I took this photo, I had a split second to do so and did not have time to mentally realize that a vertical shot would have been better. I’ve wondered for a while how I could improve this image. Then, a photo rater named Eyal Nahmias suggested adding layers to give the bluebird more head room. I took his advice and came up with this newly-recreated version of Bluebird with Skink. I think it gives the image a fresh, new, more spacious look. Hope you like it.

This male bluebird is puffed up and proud as he shows his latest catch, a nice fat spider, in the ongoing hunt to find food for the nestlings. I am flabbergasted at the tireless activity of these tiny creatures and at their ability to hunt so skillfully and so swiftly. It takes all I have to keep up with them as they go back and forth from the nestbox to the field in search of food. Their labors will soon be rewarded with fledglings that successfully leave the nest and grace the world with their beauty and diligence.
