  • This was a photo I shot last week while at our local zoo here in Florida. / The word “bald” originally meant “white-headed.” The scientific name, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, means “white-headed sea eagle” in Latin. / Male and female bald eagles are identical in color. The distinctive white head and tail mark an adult, a sexually mature bird that is at least 4 to 5 years old. Younger individuals are almost solid brown, although a general mottling in the body feathers and a light coloration in the head and tail develop in older immatures. Both young and adult bald eagles have yellow legs. The young birds have a dark beak and black eyes, both of which turn bright yellow as they become adults. They have up to a 7-foot wingspan, the bald eagle is one of the largest birds of prey in the world. Adults are 3 to 3 1/2 feet tall and weigh 8 to 15 pounds. Like many predatory birds, the female is larger than the male, but size cannot be used conclusively for identification. Nests usually are built near the top of a large tree. Enlarged annually, a bald eagle nest can become the largest of any North American bird. The record nest measured 20 feet deep, 10 feet wide and weighed two tons! Immature bald eagles often are confused with golden eagles, which also are nearly solid brown. One characteristic that sets the two species apart is the legs. The bald eagle’s legs are naked, while golden eagles have feathers all the way down to the talons. In flight, bald eagles soar with flat wings while golden eagles soar with their wings raised in a slight “V”.

  • Bird of Paradise
    by Bonnie Taylor Barry

    US$4.27–US$114.00

When I was vacationing on Sanibel Island, Florida, the gardener at the hotel noticed me taking macro shots of the flowers and led me to the bird of paradise that was blooming in a hidden spot. He was so kind, cutting away excess foliage that was blocking the flowers and making sure I’d get clean, clear access to the blossoms. I’d like to dedicate this image to all people who treat strangers like me with kindness and concern. Thanks, Mr. Gardener, whoever you are!

This was a photo I had taken over on Merritt Island, Florida of an Osprey. These are amazing and beautiful birds of prey!! The sky that day was very cloudy and washed out but it couldn’t dampen my enthusiasm for being able to see these magnificent birds in their natural habitat!! So I’ve taken the original shot and blended it onto another photo I had taken of a storm rolling in off the ocean as the sun was setting with Adobe PhotoShop. Best viewed enlarged. /

  • Deep In "Thought"
    by TrEaSuReDiMaGeS

    US$3.99–US$106.40

This was another photo I shot at the Rehabilitation Facility called Busch Gardens Wildlife Sanctuary. Their aim is to rehab and release animals back into their natural habitats if at all possible. They do amazing work. / Barred owls are large owls with round heads and NO ear tufts. They are brownish-gray with brown and white bars across their chest. (That’s why they’re called “barred” owls.) Their legs are covered with feathers. The barred owls’ eyes are dark brown, while most other owls have yellow eyes. Their beaks are sharp, but very small, so they are almost covered up by facial feathers. Owls can see very well at night, but they can also see during the day. They have a special inner eyelid which blocks bright sunlight – owl sunglasses! When hunting, they usually perch in a tree and watch and listen for prey. Then they swoop down and grab it with their talons (claws). Their toes are special. Normally, two go forward and two go back. This helps them get a good grip on their prey. But they can turn a back toe forward if they want. This may help them to hold on to a perch tree. Barred owls (like all owls) are carnivores (meat-eaters). Barred owls live all over the eastern U.S., and are very common in Florida. Their calls sound like “who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?” :-)) Since barred owls like to live near water, they may get tangled in fishing line someone has left behind. Sometimes they are hit by cars while looking for prey near a road.

  • The Stunning Bald Eagle…...... Bald Eagles live near large bodies of open water such as lakes, marshes, seacoasts and rivers, where there are plenty of fish to eat and tall trees for nesting and roosting. Bald Eagles have a presence in every U. S. state except Hawaii. Bald Eagles use a specific territory for nesting, winter feeding or a year-round residence. Its natural domain is from Alaska to Baja, California, and from Maine to Florida. Bald Eagles that reside in the northern U. S. and Canada migrate to the warmer southern climates of the U. S. during the winter to obtain easier access to food, especially fish. Some Bald Eagles that reside in the southern U. S. migrate slightly north during the hot summer months.

  • Florida Moonlight
    by Ginny Schmidt

    US$4.70–US$125.40

This is a digitally created image inspired by my recent attempts to photograph a similar scene. Just a few nights ago, a bright, huge full moon was shining through the tree tops across the street over my neighbor’s house. Try as I might, I could not capture a satisfactory picture with my meager camera equipment. The image in my mind, however, would not go away, so I decided to create one. For the moon, I used a base stock photo as a model and drew my own dark and bright spots in photoshop, blurred the result, cut out the circle and pasted it onto a background that I had previously prepared by creating the haze that had so enchanted me the other night when I was trying to photograph it. The foreground is a composite of foliage cut from various pictures in my own photographic archives, all taken by me. The bird on the lamppost I shot during a walk on Friendship Trail Bridge one recent Sunday evening. I contemplated not adding him and his lamppost to this picture, but I have no other plans to use him and, hokey or not, I couldn’t resist putting him in, silhouetted against the bright full moon. It’s a cormorant, I think, and I have no idea if he would be found on a similar perch in the moonlight, but they have to sleep somewhere, right, so why not here. / /
