  • As Autumn begins to give way to winter, the morning sky and light becomes more soft, as Mother Nature takes a turn and starts her winter hibernation. This sure was a different styled shot for me. I actually intended to get down to Washington Park and shoot the sunrise but instead was greeted with something that seemed otherworldly. The sun backlighting the clouds and the dampness in the air made for quite a surreal feeling, standing here in absolute solitude, not a sound, not even the Geese you see in the water made a sound…it was ominous. I figured I would try something really different for once and got out my tripod and put on my Minolta 28mm F2.8 lens for this shot ( I am LOVING that damned lens BTW, sharp as a tack!) and started firing off shots, then it hit me,—-why don’t I try a few long exposures, and well, this is the end result. 10 seconds. Personally I kinda like it, an odd impression it gives with the Geese in the water, reminds me of a painting, and surreal as well. Does it work?? I am not entirely sure, you be the judge. I would love to hear what ya all think of this shot. I have gone ahead and submitted it under the surreal category, a category I don’t think I have ever submitted to before…. Anyways, I would love some feedback on this! / Thanks all! / -John / -—-—-—-——- See more on my website jdebordphoto.com / All artwork is © John De Bord, All Rights Reserved. • “The real voyage of discovery is not in seeking new places, but in seeing with new eyes” / Marcel Proust * Listen to Mountains and Streams*

  • Precious rain leaves its bounty for desert wildlife. Joshua Tree National Park, California. Taken on the East side of the Geology Road, 2008.

  • Woman feeding cats on tin roof with seagull looking on in Porto, Portugal.

  • These fighting kittiwakes were an extremely challenging subject to photograph – with very poor light and it always happens so fast. / / (Diskobukta, Spitsbergen – Scandinavian Arctic) / / / >< / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

  • Captured on an early morning at Denver’s historic Washington Park. Standing here taking in the scene, was just amazing, sheer serenity….so utterly quiet I didn’t even hear the Goose swimming by. Amazing that in such a large city, nature thrives, never knowing that this peace is surrounded by so many people. And for once, the world just seemed like such a better place….. —-—-—-—-—-—-— See more on my website jdebordphoto.com / All artwork is © John De Bord, All Rights Reserved. • A woman in a bright orange dress looks out over the backwaters in Kerala, India. That is a banana tree she is standing next to. Not only is it’s fruit delicious and sweet (much better than the crappy bananas we get in Melbourne), but the large leaves are used as plates for eating spicy ‘thali’ throughout Kerala and Tamil Nadu. I would like to have framed this a little differently, but it was taken from a moving boat, and only seen at the last second.

  • Panorama – penguin colonies, cruise ship & tourists, Petermann Island, Antarctica

  • Taken at Rottrest Island – Western Australia. This pelican was airing his wings standing on a post like the one in the image. Was lucky enough to be in position after almost running 200m to reach the spot where his enormous span could be seen. On cue he took off and this is the result.

  • “I Make the Best of It“ Having a bad-hair day? Make the best of it… it can’t be as bad as this Emu with a grassy hairdo… / When I shot this at the Indianapolis Zoo, I was really pleased to see the Emu had such a large area to roam. I think she/he definitely was trying to attract a mate with this new hairdo, and making the best of it! lol……. • King Penguins hanging out on the beach! / / This is one amazing island that you all must try to get to, if you don’t mind four days in rough seas on a boat that is!!! But it is truly worth it…. / / This image was taken at a place called “Salisbury Plain”, where there are approximately 250 000 penguins! The sound as you come over the hill is tremendous, not to mention the smell!! / / Salisbury Plane – South Georgia

  • WILD & FREE / / Gentoo Penguin about to feed its Chick. (Antarctic Peninsula) Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice reduces vital food sources, such as krill. / / Gentoos are now listed as nearly endangered on the IUCN Red List. / / / / /

  • The Penguin Parade is located on Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia, only 140 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. It is part of Phillip Island Nature Park. The area is a reserve designed to protect and promote awareness of Little Penguins (previously called Fairy Penguins). The first night I was on Phillip Island I went to the Penguin Parade. Each night at sunset, the world’s smallest penguins, the Little Penguins, emerge from the sea and waddle ashore to their sand dune burrows with bellies full of the days catch. I was amazed at how far they travel from their burrows. The elevated boardwalks and viewing stands allow you to enjoy all the ‘penguin action’ without disturbing them or their burrow homes. / I stayed on the platform and watched them for two hours, getting soaked in rain storms and freezing winds…........was worth it !!! And yes it was Summer LOL / / BTW you are not permitted to take any photographic equipment into the boardwalk/ platform area. This shot however was taken at The Nobbies area on the side of a cliff. The penguins are a bluish colour and are so adorable, was hard to leave. / Jan 08

  • Douglas DC-3 without wording Pencil on 14×17 Strathmore drawing medium 80lb. paper sprayed with lacquer. United airlines DC-3 makes ready for flight. The DC-3 was built in the 1930’s and is still flying today. Updates to avionics and engines have been made, but the basic airframe has been left alone. Just goes to show that it is truly hard to improve on a perfect design that meets so many requirements or fills so many demands. Cheers to Mr. Douglas!
