This is the spring counterpart to my other Barred owl called Winter’s watchman Taken in the same general area in April 2005. You can tell he was just in the swampy water below, either bathing or chasing after a snake to eat, by the wetness present on his feathers.

We have them here where I live and they are energetic little acrobats. They come to my bird feeders all the time. If you sit real still they will come close to you. I had them sit on my drawing pad last summer while I drew them. They were being my feathered models.

After a very long winter (so far) I needed something that sang Spring time is just around the corner! After a lot of fuss, and several hours, in Photoshop and Painter X this is the final result. Every pixel of this piece was re-painted (digitally) by hand. All of the apple blossoms and leaves were created from scratch. As a final touch I added some texture to the piece to give it that last little edge I was looking for. Featured in The Birds – Feb. 15, 2009 / I can almost feel it. Spring is JUST around the corner. It’s such an exciting time in Canada after a long and cold winter. The lilac trees bloom putting forth the sweetest scent and the hummingbirds return to our property after a long migration. Yes, Spring will be here before we know it. I can’t wait! I spent countless HOURS last summer, sitting in a lawn chair, ever so patiently waiting to try & capture one of these little darlings in flight. They are only 7-9 cm long. While hovering their wings beat 55x/s, 61x/s when moving backwards, and at least 75x/s when moving forward! / / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—— / Processing info: / This image started out with 3 photograph layers (the lilac background image, a female ruby-throated hummingbird, and the tail from a different photo of the same bird). I took all of the original images with my Canon DSLR. After removing the background around the original bird photos I merged all of the layers in PhotoShop. I digitally painted/blended the entire image in Corel Painter X using the Impasto Depth Smear brush at 30% opacity. I cloned out a distracting branch in the upper left corner and performed blend # 2 work on the main lilac blooms, hummingbird, and the largest leaves using grainy blender 10 brush at 38% opacity. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

Watercolor and pencil on illustration board, / 10×8 / 2009 Model: Adhara Batul One of the Greek myths I adore the most, for its incredible strength, poetry and significance, is the myth of Persephone. In Greek mythology, Persephone was the goddess of the underworld and of the Spring growth. Daughter of Demeter, goddess of the harvest, she was abducted by Hades and taken to the land of the dead. By a determination of the Fates, she was forced to stay for two seasons each year after eating pomegranates seeds, thus becoming consort of Hades and queen of the underworld. This time I opted by depicting her sorrow and solitude after having the seeds, although there’s quite an air of resignation with her destiny.

Taken with the Nikon D40x and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens at 1/400 shutter and f/5.6 aperture, exp +.33, focal length 300mm and iso 400. Single handheld image duplicated 3 times in Photoshop to evals of +3, 0, -1 and -2 then processed in Photomatix Pro. By the way, everyone, fyi, there’s an update to Photomatix!!! Thank you again, Karl Williams for the info!!!!! Two textures added amid a flurry of dodging and burning and tinkering!! The Dark-Eyed Junco / “Dark-eyed Junco: Medium sparrow with considerable geographic color variation, although all exhibit a pink bill, dark eyes, white belly, dark-centered tail with white outer feathers. Short flight with white outer tail feathers flashing, alternates several rapid wing beats with wings pulled to sides. / Interesting Facts: / The Dark-eyed Junco was the most common feeder bird in North America during the 1996-1997 Project FeederWatch season. / They mainly eat insects and seeds. However, they will sometimes eat their own droppings. / A flash of white tail feathers serves as an alarm to other members of the flock. / A group of sparrows has many collective nouns, including a “crew”, “flutter”, “meinie”, “quarrel”, and “ubiquity” of sparrows.” / Thank you WhatBird.com for the info!!
