The Gentoo Penguin is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. Temperatures on the frozen continent are rising five times faster than the global average due to the unprecedented rate of climate change, pushing four species perilously close to extinction. Warmer temperatures are forcing penguins to raise their young on increasingly thinner and more precarious ice floes, while stronger winds mean many eggs and chicks are being blown away from their parents before they are able to survive on their own. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice destroys nesting sites and reduces vital food sources, such as krill.

  • I took this photo in Costa Rica.

  • I was shocked to see Teensy standing at the edge of the nest this morning while Mom and Daddy Cardinal clicked and chinked encouragingly to their little one. After a treat from Dad and more clicks and chinks from Mom, Teensy spread tiny wings and took flight to a neighboring rosebush. I will miss seeing the family interacting in their nest in the rosebush near my bedroom window, but I feel blessed beyond words to have been given the opportunity to watch Teensy’s life unfold from egg to hatchling to fledgling. Maybe I’ll spot Teensy later at the feeders! I’ll be sure to keep you posted and thank you for viewing my series of Life with the Cardinals.

  • In this painting I have endeavored to reduce the landscape down to its absolute minimum, focusing purely on the line of salt-bush on the horizon, with one solitary bird hovering in the air, to give the impression of the raw empty heat of a mid day summer where nothing stirs until l the cool of the evening. . . • During my holiday in Cairns I managed to drag the boys to 4 “zoos” in 2 days (impressive no?) This was ‘Birdworld’ at Kuranda, I’ve never been to one of these enclosures, I almost fainted when the second I walked inside this bird flew down and sat on my shoulder. Very cute little guy, until he decided he liked my sapphire earrings and wanted to bite them out of my ears! He wasn’t impressed when I told him no, and proceeded to bite me all over my hands! So cheeky! But absolutely adorable and such a little poser, I have plenty of shots of him.
