On the 12th day of May 2008 I witnessed (along with thousands of others) a perfect circle in the form of a rainbow around the sun at about noon-time at a beautiful place in the Philippines. Completely perplexed, stunned and amazed at this extraordinary and divine sight, I HAD to create this artwork. Im not sure where you were or what you were doing at this same moment of time but I guess this is all we have. Small pigments of time all squeezed together. And if we’re blessed enough, we get moments like these and realise even for a second the gravity of God’s love. There were no photo’s taken at the time and all I had available to me was the memory of this moment… The moment my heart burned. Print available. / Vector digital art created in illustrator.

Waercolor and a touch of colored pencil on watercolor board. This painting was inspired by horses depicted in primitive art, primarily those found in caves in France. I like their full, round haunches and swollen pregnant bellies, delicate small heads and the tiny hooves at the end of slender match stick legs. I was thinking about shapeshifting, shamanic dream travel, dreams in general, and ancient beliefs in the goddesses who inspired dreams. The woman inside the horse’s belly is dream traveling. Ancient Celtic and Greek myth held that the goddess’ horses transport dreamers to other dimensions within their bellies. She could also be a shapeshifter, traveling to other realms wearing the form of a horse. / The poem I wrote incorporates symbols and colors of the Celtic Goddesss Rhiannon and another manifestation, Epona. In both aspects the goddess is connected with equines. There’s a small bird appearing from behind the main horse’s front hooves. Birds are messengers of the goddess and connected with her as helpers and informants as well. I slashed and painted ‘stitches’ on parts of the larger painting, indicating the way dreams begin to fragment as we awaken and the waking world once again becomes our reality. No matter how we try to repair the dream and return to its reality, the vision falls away like transparent veils and we awaken. This is the poem I wrote about the painting: Nightmares In the misty dimension of betwixt and between / Sun gold, blood crimson, leaf green, / Dwell luminous birds of fantastic feathers / Their task to sing free the reasoning mind, / Loosen confining fetters and everyday tethers. / Her sacred horses of long, tangled manes / Sun gold, blood crimson, leaf green / Hooves restless they stand awaiting their task, / That of transporting bold spirits on the red – eye flight / To the borderland realm of night – fright. / Escape is impossible, for there is no solution / Sun gold, blood crimson, leaf green / Riddle and metaphor now collide with illusion. / The sleeper, gone mute, attempts a shrill scream, / When a voice whispers clear, quite close to the ear: / “My dear, its only a dream!” Text and image copyright Helena Nelson -Reed.
