the brilliant male cardinal paid another visit to the feeder today. I never tire of seeing this magnificent cresture, nor tire of photographing it. Every shot is different and unique, I love the way he fanned out his tail, cocked his head, as if to say, “take this shot!” /

I was lucky to see one of these Zebra finches and was busy photographing it, when all of a sudden I had two of them in my viewfinder. They stuck around for a while so got quite a few shots of them. A Grade Honours Feb 2008 / North Shore Photographic Society

Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Australian King Parrot Sets of Two: / A_Top_Spot The colours of the male King Parrot are striking, with the head and underparts being vivid scarlet, the back and wings are a rich green and the tail a deep blue. It has pale green markings on its wings. Their eyes have a yellow ring and their bill is red above and blackish below. / The King Parrot can be found along the eastern side of Australia’s mainland, from Cooktown in Queensland and inland to the Carnarvon Ranges, into the NSW wooded coastline and inland to the Warrumbungles National Park, down to the bottom end of Victoria and inland to Wodonga. Their habitat varies to include rainforests, palm forests, eucalypt forests, dense gullies, clearings, coastal woodlands, farms and orchards, parks and gardens. / Their diet consists of leaf buds and new shoots, blossoms, nectar and seeds from natives such as eucalypt and acacia, as well as introduced plants, but they are also known to raid orchards and farms for fruit and vegetables such as apple and corn. / The King Parrot breeds from September to January and builds its nest in tree hollows, high off the ground. Three to five eggs are laid which are incubated by the female for around twenty days. The young are fed initially by the female, but then by both parents once half grown. Young fledge after five weeks. The Parrot is common in its ranges.

In the morning, small groups, noisly move out to feed on big fruiting trees. What a character this guy was – makes me smile just to look at him! The Young Bird Catcher / A six-year old boy that can catch a bird for his meal.

This male Eastern bluebird is helping the female build a nest with straw. The outcome is always a marvel, a perfectly formed little teacup-shaped nest that is usually topped off with a tiny feather before egg-laying begins, one a day for five days. Then comes incubation time, hatching, tending the nestlings, and finally giving the babies freedom when they fledge. Here in southern Louisiana, the scenario is repeated three times with as many as 15 new baby bluebirds coming into the world in a pair’s spring/summer mating season. I never tire of watching the drama. This beautiful little male is making his home in my mother’s yard where there are doves, finches, titmice, chickadees, cardinals, sparrows, red-wing blackbirds, and Lord knows what else! They love it there!

I was shocked and stunned when this male Eastern bluebird landed on the birdhouse with THIS for dinner! I didn’t know bluebirds were such skilled hunters; I have newfound respect ever since I took this photo for their cunning, their speed, and their power in nabbing prey as quick moving and elusive as skinks! Many thanks to Kimberly Palmer who nominated this image to Pay It Forward group; this is what Kimmie had to say about the photo: “I fell in love with this picture the first moment I saw it. I would like to nominate it for its beauty of the bluebird, and for the awesome detail…. and because this lovely bluebird captured a SKINK! This male bluebird is QUITE the hunter, I’d say.
