The King Vulture Portrait…... Please view this bird larger he is stunning ! ... (-: The King Vulture, is a large Central and South American bird in the New World vulture family Cathartidae. This vulture lives predominantly in tropical lowland forests stretching from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. The adult King Vulture is the most strikingly colored of the New World Vultures. King Vultures have lived up to 30 years in captivity, though their lifespan in the wild is unknown. This vulture uses urohydrosis, defecating on its legs, in order to lower its body temperature. Despite its bill and large size, it is relatively unaggressive at a kill and will normally back down rather than fight. The King Vulture lacks a voice box, though it can make low croaking noises and wheezing sounds. Its only natural predators are snakes, which will prey upon the vulture’s eggs and young, and large cats such as jaguars, which may surprise and kill an adult vulture at a carcass. The King Vulture feeds solely on carrion and, unlike some New World Vultures, is not known to kill sick or dying animals for food.It often eats stranded fish along river banks, but does not come to village refuse dumps for food.Though it has keen eyesight which can help it locate food. There is evidence that suggests a decline in population, though it is not significant enough to cause it to be listed. This decline is due primarily to habitat destruction and poaching.

It has pale green markings on its wings. Their eyes have a yellow ring and their bill is red above and blackish below. / The King Parrot can be found along the eastern side of Australia’s mainland, from Cooktown in Queensland and inland to the Carnarvon Ranges, into the NSW wooded coastline and inland to the Warrumbungles National Park, down to the bottom end of Victoria and inland to Wodonga. Their habitat varies to include rainforests, palm forests, eucalypt forests, dense gullies, clearings, coastal woodlands, farms and orchards, parks and gardens. / Their diet consists of leaf buds and new shoots, blossoms, nectar and seeds from natives such as eucalypt and acacia, as well as introduced plants, but they are also known to raid orchards and farms for fruit and vegetables such as apple and corn. / The King Parrot breeds from September to January and builds its nest in tree hollows, high off the ground. Three to five eggs are laid which are incubated by the female for around twenty days. The young are fed initially by the female, but then by both parents once half grown. Young fledge after five weeks. The Parrot is common in its ranges.

Featured in Human. Animal. Nature./Człowiek. Zwierzę. Natura. _ September 1, 2009. / Featured in _Natural color and light January 16, 2009. Of all the birds who visit my feeders, the cardinals are my favorites. (Yes, I do love my blue birds more, but they do not visit feeders … at least MINE don’t). The cardinals are my companions all year long … and this past breeding season we were blessed with a lovely family who have stayed to winter with me. Funny thing about them, some of the babies contracted a bit of a feather problem, mites I’ve been told, and boy, did they look sad!! But I was further told that the first cold snap would solve the problem … and I’m happy to relate that the whole family is now as lovely as this fellow! Image taken January 9, 2009 with the Nikon D40x, using the 70-300mm VR lens (at 300mm). See his companion here: / Golden Queen “Size & Shape / The Northern Cardinal is a fairly large, long-tailed songbird with a short, very thick bill and a prominent crest. Cardinals often sit with a hunched-over posture and with the tail pointed straight down. Color Pattern / Male cardinals are brilliant red all over, with a reddish bill and black face immediately around the bill. Females are pale brown overall with warm reddish tinges in the wings, tail, and crest. They have the same black face and red-orange bill. Behavior / Northern Cardinals tend to sit low in shrubs and trees or forage on or near the ground, often in pairs. They are common at bird feeders but may be inconspicuous away from them, at least until you learn their loud, metallic chip note. Habitat / Look for Northern Cardinals in inhabited areas such as backyards, parks, woodlots, and shrubby forest edges. Northern Cardinals nest in dense tangles of shrubs and vines.” the above information is thanks to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology

FEATURED in Unlimited Quality on June 19/09! Many thanks to the hard working kind hosts of this group! Also, I can’t thank the group hosts of The Birds for also so kindly featuring this photo on June 19/09! I call this mature male Rufous Humming Bird the King over his territory, as he keeps busy warding off all other birds who dare to intrude on his territory to feed from the feeder in which he has claimed ownership over. He doesn’t believe in sharing! lol / Rufous Hummingbirds like all Humming Birds can fly amazingly fast, often darting with pinpoint maneuverability. They are pugnacious and tirelessly chase away other hummingbirds, even in placess they’re only visiting on migration. Like other hummers, they eat insects as well as nectar, taking them from spider webs or catching them in midair. / Measurements Both Sexes / Length / 7–9 cm (2.8–3.5 in ) Wingspan / 11 cm (4.3 in) / Weight / (2–5 g) 0.1–0.2 oz Relative Size / About the same size as a Ruby-throated Hummingbird When viewed in the larger size, this bird shows larger than in real life! “PHOTO INFORMATION” Taken on June 17/09 at 2:19pm / Shot in raw, aperture priority and adobe RGB col space Downloaded into Lightroom and adjusted histogram.
