I was out on my deck tonight playing with the chickadees (again) when this beautiful blue jay landed on my deck railing no more than 4-5 feet away from me. They are normally quite timid but this one seems to be getting accustomed to my presence. This is the first time I was lucky enough to get a half decent shot and this was the ONLY chance I had on this night! Photo taken in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada Canon Rebel XTi | Manual Mode, f/4.0 @ 97mm / Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS Photoshop Edits: removed a few background distractions (thankfully there weren’t many). I also changed the deck rail color tone to blue and faded it out at opposite ends to soften it. / / / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

FEATURED ON RED BUBBLE HOME PAGE OCT. 9, 2008 The Blue Jay measures 9-12 inches (22-30 cm) from bill to tail and weighs 2.47-3.53 ounces (70–100 g), with a wingspan of 13–17 in (34–43 cm).[1] There is a pronounced crest on the head, a crown of feathers, which may be raised or lowered according to the bird’s mood. When excited or aggressive, the crest may be fully raised. When frightened, the crest bristles outwards, brushlike. When the bird is feeding among other jays or resting, the crest is flattened to the head.[2] Its plumage is lavender-blue to mid-blue in the crest, back, wings, and tail, and its face is white. The underside is off-white and the neck is collared with black which extends to the sides of the head. The wing primaries and tail are strongly barred with black, sky-blue and white. The bill, legs, and eyes are all black. Males and females are nearly identical; males are slightly larger.[3] As with other blue-hued birds, the Blue Jay’s coloration is not derived by pigments, but is the result of light refraction due to the internal structure of the feathers; if a blue feather is crushed, the blue disappears as the structure is destroyed. This is referred to as structural coloration / Copyright 2008 Julie – Julie Alexander. All Rights Reserved. Unauthorized use prohibited. My work does NOT belong to the public domain. • STELLER'S JAY
    by Sandy Stewart

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Both sexes look alike. / Size: 30-34 cm (12-13 in) / Weight: 100-140 g (3.53-4.94 ounces). The Steller’s Jay and the Blue Jay are the only New World jays that use mud in the construction of their nests. / The Steller’s Jay shows a great deal of variation in appearance throughout its range, with some populations featuring black crests and backs, and others blue. One black-crested form in southern Mexico is surrounded by eight other blue-crested forms. / The Steller’s Jay periodically irrupts away from its normal range. Most of these far-ranging individuals appear to be young birds. For an example of such an irruption as detected by FeederWatch data, click here. / Steller’s and Blue jays are the only North American jays with crests. The Blue Jay is expanding its range westward. Where they meet, the two species occasionally interbreed and produce hybrids.

  • JJ & breakfast
    by Lenny La Rue, IPA

    US$3.56–US$95.00

JJ is one of my best friends from Weedy Field. He was always the most inquisitive blue jay around but he was also unusually quiet for a jay. When I started bringing peanuts, he’d murmur unlike anything I’d heard in a blue jay before. Now, I can call him from 200 yards away with a very weak whistle and he’ll land in the branch closest to my head and murmur. He’s not ready to be hand-fed yet but we will come well within reach and look at me with patient eyes and an eager beak. LOL! This shot came from the hand-held Nikon D80 again but the next shots should come from the camera being triggered remotely while on a tripod. With any good timing at all, I’ll catch him much closer with a wider angle 18 55mm lens and possibly looking at me with those surprising seemingly intelligent eyes. Oh, and yes, the peanuts are unsalted since I don’t need to be paying for health care for scrub jays or the brown tree squirrels who share them. ;-)

  • An older piece of work from 2007. A bluejay on the deck rail of a friend’s backyard deck. They feed this bird peanuts, right from the hand, and often in the shell. He flies away, breaks the shell (leaves the litter too) and returns for another until he’s full. To purchase this Print, please click HERE © Reg. • birds
    by David Friederich

    US$3.85–US$76.95

The Steller’s Jay is a gorgeous bird, and the emblematic bird of British Columbia. He can be a nuisance though, to campers, and those who put out bird feeders. Some people think he is too aggressive. I love his feisty nature, cacophonous call, and mostly his wonderful colours.
