  • Canadian Goose and Snow Geese at Freezeout Lake, 50 miles north west of Great Falls Montana. Freezeout Lake is on the snow goose migration route and hundreds of thousands of geese stop there each spring while migrating from California to Alaska and Canada. This is two shots from the same area combined, adding the canadian goose to the scene. Freezeout lake got its’ name from the game of poker played at a stage stop station located near the lake many years ago.

  • A clumsy, newly hatched gosling. (May 1, 2008)

  • I was driving to work one day and saw a flash of yellow run by on the side of the road. There was this little goose and Mom was nowhere around. A man who happened to be working on the phone lines nearby said she’d been there for a couple of hours. So he helped me catch her (believe me, these little guys are fast….and I’m not). Eventually I was able to find a flock of Canadian Geese with some similar aged gosling. I was amazed at how quickly she was accepted into the group. I could distinguish her from the others for a few weeks because she was a little younger and smaller. She assimilated very well. • The same gosling as the last one – out of the 4 new goslings in the goose family, this little guy was the adventurous one. The other 3 would stick close to mom and dad, but this one would stray a little, which made it fairly easy to isolate him for some good behavior shots. I have about 50 shots of him that I liked (check my web site for more in the series), but these last 2 are my favorites. Canada Geese 9which this little guy is) are mostly herbivores, and he’s going to town tearing off bite-sized leaves for breakfast.
