Taken in Tunga/Zuga, a remote village in Nigeria. Mary is aged 12 years old and her mission is to care for her younger brother. Each day Mum and Dad work in the small field from sunrise to sunset. there is no school here and the nearest one is 4 miles away. Children are so precious and I cannot help but think of the great benefits our children have here in England and other developed countries. Please help us to help those in rural and isolated villages in Africa. This was started in Apophysis, then to GIMP, finished in photoshop with wacom pen and pad. For some reason this reminded me of Arsnic and Old Lace. / Abit off the path from my other work but the crow is a friend. / Featured in HALLOWEEN
Came across this aggressive bird. Not sure why he had his feathers in a knot, but it made for a great shot! The Eagle Owl is a large and powerful bird, smaller than the Golden Eagle but larger than the Snowy Owl. It has a wingspan of up to 138-200 cm (55-79 in) and measures 58-75 cm (23-30 in) long. Females weigh 1.75-4.2 kg (3.9-9.4 lbs) and males weigh 1.5-3.2 kg (3.3-7 lbs). In comparison, the common Barn Owl weighs about 500 grams (1.1 lbs). It mainly feeds on small mammals, but can kill prey up to the size of foxes and young deer (up to 10 kg/22 lb), if taken by surprise. Larger prey (over 3 kg/7 lb) is consumed on the ground which leaves the bird vulnerable (for example to foxes).

The Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) is a medium to large bird of prey, whose range covers most of Europe and extends into Asia. It is typically between 51-57 cm in length with a 110 to 130 cm (48-60 inch) wingspan, making it a medium-sized raptor. There are around 40,000 breeding pairs in Britain. It is usually resident all year except in the coldest parts of its range, and in the case of one subspecies. It breeds in woodland, usually on the fringes, but favours hunting over open land. It eats mainly small mammals, and will come to carrion. A great opportunist, it adapts well to a varied diet of pheasant, rabbit, other small mammals, snakes and lizards and can often be seen walking over recently ploughed fields looking for worms and insects. They are fiercely territorial, and, though rare, fights do break out if one strays on another pair’s territory, but dominant displays of aggression will normally see off the interloper. Pairs mate for life. To attract a mate (or impress his existing mate) the male performs a ritual aerial display before the beginning of Spring. This spectacular display is known as ‘the roller coaster’. He will rise high up in the sky, to turn and plummet downward, in a spiral, twisting and turning as he comes down. To then rise immediately upward to repeat the exercise. This broad-winged raptor has a wide variety of plumages, and in Europe can be confused with the similar Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus) and the only distantly related Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), which mimics the Common Buzzard’s plumage for a degree of protection from Goshawks. The plumage can vary in Britain from almost pure white to black, but is usually shades of brown, with a pale ‘necklace’ of feathers. The call is a plaintive peea-ay, similar to a cat’s meow.
Featured in the group Bits and Pieces in August 2009 / The Plum-throated Cotinga (Cotinga maynana) is a species of bird in the Cotingidae family. It is monotypic within the genus Porphyrolaema. It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical swamps and heavily degraded former forest. / What was amazing about this capture is that this is a very, very rare bird. It is not necessarily at risk in terms of population decline but is extremely difficult to get a good picture because it is lives high up in the highest branches of the forest. The ornithologist that I met in Leticia was almost ecstatic when he saw this image. I had never seen one before and perhaps the most amazing discovery was that this bird was captured in hand by a girl in the indigenous community we visited. And this was the only place we stopped to meet and talk with there and she showed us this bird! I couldn’t believe it!! The Amazon is indeed an amazing land of discovery!!!
