The Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) is a medium to large bird of prey, whose range covers most of Europe and extends into Asia. It is typically between 51-57 cm in length with a 110 to 130 cm (48-60 inch) wingspan, making it a medium-sized raptor. There are around 40,000 breeding pairs in Britain. Pairs mate for life. To attract a mate (or impress his existing mate) the male performs a ritual aerial display before the beginning of Spring. This spectacular display is known as ‘the roller coaster’. He will rise high up in the sky, to turn and plummet downward, in a spiral, twisting and turning as he comes down. To then rise immediately upward to repeat the exercise. This broad-winged raptor has a wide variety of plumages, and in Europe can be confused with the similar Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus) and the only distantly related Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), which mimics the Common Buzzard’s plumage for a degree of protection from Goshawks. The plumage can vary in Britain from almost pure white to black, but is usually shades of brown, with a pale ‘necklace’ of feathers. Bush Stone-Curlew, Australian native ground-dwelling bird. These are a terrestrial predator filling a similar ecological niche to the roadrunners of North America. This shot was just after a heavy rain storm, so he was pretty wet :) Canon 50D, 300mm.

/ / Island Dreams Media – pencil and photoshop / Substrate – paper Dedication – to Jack during my recent holiday I had time to relax and meditate, to connect with nature….this is an expression of my impression of Tangalooma. There are dolphins there, with whom i connected daily and a lot of sealife, including birds, seastars, rays, fish…. the original drawing is gifted to Jack, a fellow artist i met on Tangalooma and now friend, who really appreciated this drawing so much, that I felt greatly encouraged….
The Whistling Kite, an Australian native eagle, that can also be found in New Caledonia and New Guinea. Called the “whistling kite” because of the loud whistling call it makes, often while in flight. This one photographed on the edge of Lake Cooribah, Noosa Northshore, Queensland. They feed mostly on live small mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, insects and sometimes dead animals or carrion. Like most eagles, they are the masters of the sky in soaring effortlessly and diving for the kill. This shot was just before a dive, he was applying the brakes as he spotted a meal. Canon 50D, 400mm. I was forunate for a split second for it to keep still, I managed to zoom in on it’s eye. Peregrines have suffered illegal killing from gamekeepers and landowners, and been a target for egg collectors, but better legal protection and control of pesticides (which indirectly poisoned birds) have helped the population to recover considerably from a low in the 1960s. Some birds, particularly females and juveniles, move away from the uplands in autumn. / RSPB.
9×12 watercolor and colored pencil on watercolor paper This is another piece inspired by a Led Zeppelin song, Going to California. Particularly the lines “someone told me there’s a girl out there with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair”. And then there is that purely esoteric line “Children of the sun begin to awake.” / The ancient Incans called themselves The Children of the Sun. They had legends of a white bearded man that came from ancient Lemuria and brought to them the great spiritual knowledge of Lemuria. Many believe that it is the souls of Lemuria that are awaking now(The Children of the Sun) and are bringing us into the New Age of Peace and Enlightenment. I wonder if Plant knew all this when he wrote those lyrics.

9×12 pastel on Sennelier paper As humans we are always taking the spoils of nature without sharing or giving back to nature, but a fae should know better.
a male cardinal, brilliant in red, has hgis big bright eyes on the lookout for predators. Cardinals love to sit in the pine tree to check the sunflower seed feeder for safety before coming in to feed. This affords an excellent opportunity for some candid, closeup shots. I love the way the pine needles frame the cardinal, and radiate out from him.

Edgar Allen’s Crow. All outside is white as snow, / except for Edgar Allen’s crow. / Quietly and so serene, / till Edgar Allen’s crow does scream. / Waking me from peaceful dreams, / to hatred in the night. / Now I know all Edgar Allen’s, / madness in his write. / Stalkingly he walks the window, / pecking on the vane. / Now I know why Edgar Allen, / wrote of things insane. / Tis not a raven in my head, / that drives me to these words. / But this blackened beast which will not cease, / hes such a noisy bird. / I scream and shoo but he don’t move, / seems fear he does not know. / Hes not a the raven that I think, / hes Edgar Allen’s Crow. saint cynosure / /
