This image I created for George (gemlenz) / George’s dream was for a perspective of the other side from life. I know from time to time I’ve caught myself day dreaming about how life after death would be…and never will myself or anyone really know forsure, but I would like to think that it is a beautiful and very surreal place. I hope you like this George and thank you everyone for your continued support.

Waercolor and a touch of colored pencil on watercolor board. This painting was inspired by horses depicted in primitive art, primarily those found in caves in France. I like their full, round haunches and swollen pregnant bellies, delicate small heads and the tiny hooves at the end of slender match stick legs. I was thinking about shapeshifting, shamanic dream travel, dreams in general, and ancient beliefs in the goddesses who inspired dreams. The woman inside the horse’s belly is dream traveling. Ancient Celtic and Greek myth held that the goddess’ horses transport dreamers to other dimensions within their bellies. She could also be a shapeshifter, traveling to other realms wearing the form of a horse. / The poem I wrote incorporates symbols and colors of the Celtic Goddesss Rhiannon and another manifestation, Epona. In both aspects the goddess is connected with equines. There’s a small bird appearing from behind the main horse’s front hooves. Birds are messengers of the goddess and connected with her as helpers and informants as well. I slashed and painted ‘stitches’ on parts of the larger painting, indicating the way dreams begin to fragment as we awaken and the waking world once again becomes our reality. No matter how we try to repair the dream and return to its reality, the vision falls away like transparent veils and we awaken. This is the poem I wrote about the painting: Nightmares In the misty dimension of betwixt and between / Sun gold, blood crimson, leaf green, / Dwell luminous birds of fantastic feathers / Their task to sing free the reasoning mind, / Loosen confining fetters and everyday tethers. / Her sacred horses of long, tangled manes / Sun gold, blood crimson, leaf green / Hooves restless they stand awaiting their task, / That of transporting bold spirits on the red – eye flight / To the borderland realm of night – fright. / Escape is impossible, for there is no solution / Sun gold, blood crimson, leaf green / Riddle and metaphor now collide with illusion. / The sleeper, gone mute, attempts a shrill scream, / When a voice whispers clear, quite close to the ear: / “My dear, its only a dream!” Text and image copyright Helena Nelson -Reed. Amazingly there are 20 species of Magpie in the world. Not quite sure which I have painted here… looks more like an Australian magpie Many people consider them superstitious, they certainly have their place in folklore, some believe they bring good luck, others believe bad. I remember being played Rossini’s Thriving Magpie when I was quite young; it is said they have a panache for shiny, silvery things which they like to steal and hide. / Here the magpie has found a key! I wonder where it came from? I see him as a ‘Keeper of Secrets’. / The selected text comes from a traditional rhyme I was told as a child: One for sorrow, Two for joy, / Three for a girl, Four for a boy, / Five for Silver, Six for Gold / Seven for a secret never to be told This is an acrylic painting on canvas.

The subject of Secrets of Paradise… is the guide of the soul who in Jungian terms is called the anima. She is the angel, the heroine, the goddess who shines through the psychological darkness like a bright sky beckoning the beholder to follow their dream, risk the passage, and at all costs continue the quest. The adorning Peacock feather is symbolic of royalty and potency. In alchemy the peacock is cousin to the Phoenix, the mythical bird who rises from the ashes. The central theme of the image is the feminine eye, focused, a visionary awareness that resides in the human psyche; the third eye. Photography based mixed medium processed image.
