A crested lark in early morning sunlight in the dune area of the United Arab Emirates. These guys are native, and very hardy surviving in the harsh desert environment and they have a wonderful light song. This male was too preoccupied with competitors to pay much attention to me (that is why his crest is up) Featured in “Natural Color and Light” Dec 23rd -2008

A female Northern cardinal lit for a split second, allowing me to take this shot. More wary than most songbirds, the cardinal is skittish and alert and difficult to photograph at close range.

Though this bird house is actually occupied at the present time by chickadees, this male Northern cardinal paid a visit to their home and sang his heart out on top of their roof. I thought of the phrase, “Lord of the Manor,” when I witnessed Mr. Redbird perched atop the little red house (which was a gift to me from my grandson, a lovely find he came across in a National Geographic catalog and which he thought Mammy would love. I do and so do the chickadees!)

Great Crested Grebe nesting at the University of York. / Girlies had taken me Grebe hunting today and I was delighted to find a second nest, this one quite close to the edge of the lake and reasonably accessible through a bramble patch. Mrs Grebe saw & heard me approach but for once I had the camera ready and so was fast enough to get this view of her crest fully raised as she turned her head towards me. Edwardian ladies thought this wonderful crest should decorate their hats, rather than the birds’ heads. The Steller’s Jay is named after the German naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller who discovered them in 1741. It is the provincial bird of British Columbia and primarily lives in coniferous forests, although can be found in many forested areas and is also common in residential and agricultural areas with nearby forests. / Their range is primarily west of the Rocky Mountains, reaching as far south as Central America and as far north as Alaska. / The Steller’s Jay is closely related to the Blue Jay found in the rest of the continent, but has a black head and upper body. It is also known as the Long-crested Jay, the Mountain Jay, and the Pine Jay and is the only crested jay west of the Rocky Mountains. / This pair were playfully pecking each other whilst I photographed them in north Nanaimo, BC, Canada.
