Birch fences are part of my youth where I was living,at that time my mother was in chock seeing sheeps or cows in our vegetables garden and we could see hay bundles sleeping on the field.Of course I knew that if I followed the birch fence I would find the first blueberries for the love of my life,my father…a ritual I did for most of my youth. At first I only had a few bleuberries but what a treat I had looking to my father eating the first handful of those tasty wild berries.I was so proud and happy…. :)) / Taken with a D200 Nikon /

This is a drawing I have done for David my nephew for his eighteenth birthday. He came loaded with images he liked and this is what I have come up with. Coloured Pencil on smooth cartridge paper Also available as a T Shirt

A late afternoon scene in the Washington Arboretum (Seattle) in October with the white trunks of the birches reflecting brightly among the golden foliage. Canon D60.
I stood in the snow behind the tripod, so quietly that one bird landed on my lens! What joy. I couldn’t actually say we bonded, but I was thrilled. I’ve had birds land on my hat, but never one that I could see so closely. Featured in Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams – Thank you! Shot in RAW. Slight curves adjustment, at the suggestion of Eivor. The snowfall made it necessary to bump up the ISO to 320. I tried ISO 640 at one point, but those looked a tad grainy. This is a male Common Redpoll in today’s snowfall. Note snowflake on his back. Our area has so far eluded Mt. Redoubt’s harsh volcanic particles, although Alaska Airlines and FedEx had to suspend all flights in and out yesterday. On the silent, shadowy, birch lined road; / the small Robin awaits, leading me home. / Mist sets in, trees hang gracefully overhead; / Thoughts flow freely, of the many roads I’ve been lead. / The Robin waits, chirping her song, / “follow me, my friend, we’ll be home before long.” / Along this road that’s a dream, a fantasy come true, / At the end is home, where I’ll be waiting for you. / Best Viewed LARGE. / **Dedicated to those I have loved and lost. /
I took this photo of a birch tree with a knot in it that looks like an eye. When I cropped then mirrored the image, and put them together, this is what resulted. There are two separate faces- one in each tree, facing one another, but when you view the picture as a whole, there’s another face- looking forward, composed of both eyes and a heart in the center that doubles as a mouth and a nose. At least that’s how I see it. Hence the title: Natural Love.
November can generally be a dull month but in this grove of “Spirit Birch” near the shore of Lake Superior at Duluth, Minnesota, the forest was alive with songs and whispers on a snowless Thanksgiving Day. Printed, double matted and framed, this is a very compelling image.
A good snowfall reduces noise and cleans the ground of debris left by mankind. For this walk, I borrowed my husband’s 18-70mm 3.5-4.5G ED DX lens, used my monopod as a trekking pole and headed out with the dogs. Even they were quiet among the trees. Such peace. The Weeping Birch is a real winner! In summer these beauties act as mini air conditioners. I’ve spent many summers resting in the cool shade under this one or the many others that feature in ‘Howells Garden’ John’s Korumburra garden paradise.

Looking at part of the Chugach Range during our recent warm temperatures. Much of the snow has melted in the lower elevations. This has upset many dog mushers and Iditarod fans. It rained again today. Most unusual. This is an “as-is” shot, untouched, except to change from the RAW format to a jpeg. Did have the polarizing filter on, I think. While it might look over-saturated, I haven’t touched a thing. I’m experimenting with the dynamic range, to try to capture the white of the snowy mountains and the darker look of the ground without snow.
